Title: New Install - Where should I install?
Post by: tremor on May 13, 2010, 11:14:09 AM
I have chosen to use SMF 2.0 RC3 with SimplePortal 2.3.2 for a brand new community website that I intend to build.  Most of the documents for installing SMF refer to installing in a location such as mysite.com/forum or mysite.com/smf

My question is, is it preferable to install SMF into a subfolder or webroot if you intend to use it with SimplePortal on your website?  What are the reasons for and against?

Sorry if this has been asked, I searched but did not find.

--- Sidenote: the captcha is maddening, very hard to read.

If you want users going to mysite.com to immediately be at your forum/Portal Page, then go ahead and install the forum at this top-most level.

Some features of the SimplePortal Modification Package work best if you use the "front page" mode of SimplePortal. Which means SMF's main file (index.php) does all of the work for your portal page.  If you want the SimplePortal portal page to be your website's front page, you might strongly consider putting SMF in the top-most directory.

If you want users to be greeted at mysite.com by some other web page that is not part of your SMF installation, then you should consider putting SMF in a subdirectory.

Thanks, very clear. I will go with root install of SMF.
