Title: Downloads page
Post by: bigguy on October 14, 2008, 10:42:52 PM
Hello all, hows everyone doing now. I have been testing out your very nice portal system. Its very good so far. I am injoying it a lot. Before I take it to my live site though if I do I was wanting to ask if there is any plans to add a downloads area to your portal system. I think this would push it over the top for me. Thanks for taking the time to read this. (If in the wrong section please move)

Welcome to SimplePortal.net!

Don't worry, your post is in the right section.

As far as a download system, at this time the developers are not planning to add one. The main reason being that as far as SMF 1.1.x goes, there are already several download systems available. Integrating those into SP would be far easier than building our own.

For SMF 2.x, I understand it a bit more. However, it's inevitable that mods will be updated for 2.0, and others will be written.

For the moment, I don't believe it's on the agenda. However, in the future, it may come through. This request certainly isn't denied, but it's probably not something we'll see in the near future either. It may take several versions for SP to begin adding features like this.

OK, thanks for the explaination and the welcome. :) I understand completely. I'll see what I can do on my own. Maybe I can come up with something. BTW, I checked "Show new replies to your posts" and your reply to this thread was not shown. I had to manually check this board to see your reply.

It's a known issue. We're hoping to resolve it once we upgrade to SMF 2.0.

See the this topic: New Downloads section. (http://simpleportal.net/index.php?topic=2247.0)

As stated in that topic, the Simpleportal.net downloads area is a private modification, we aren't currently intending to release as a part of SimplePortal or as a separate mod.

Our site includes many customizations that are intended just for our use. The main menu links to a demo on an otherwise vanilla (new) installation of SMF, which demonstrates the capacities of SimplePortal itself. Our downloads are also open for guests to access, so you're free to download it and try it out without registering at all. There should be no misconception for registering here as to what SP does or does not include.

Ok but i've see download page and i've think: "ok i can download and use simpleportal" but in realty i can't because it don't include download mod.
For this reason i don't have other reason to maintain valid my account.
I renew my request: "Please delete me".

Well, I really think it is time to re-examine this thread a little more due to Tiny Portal, well not going away, but the lack of updates and the real need for a download manage like the one included with Tiny Portal.  Now that Bloc has decided to move on, this sets the stage for something that will be able to takes its place as there are many of us that use TP because of the available 'DownLoads Manager'.

I've looked at the one on this site and it appears to be something like, "SMFHacks" 'Downloads system Pro'.  However, $65 is a little steep just for the ability to add images with your download screen along with the fact  that many of us are not in this to make a profit from our websites and $65 would pay the hosting fee's for a year.  Please, don't get me wrong here as I feel VBgamer has a good product and it should continue to grow.

The question appears to be that there are two options for a portal to replace Tiny Portal with the ability to provide a good, workable Downloads Manager.  Simple Portal and PortaMx seem to be the leading contenders, however, both lack a good DownLoads Manager.

So, who will take up the challenge?

It is a real pity that you don't provide your privat mod for downloads.  I tried the download mods available for SMF 2.0rc4 and frankly they don't work very well at all (haven't tried the 65$ paid version as the simple version is not working correctly nor is there a support forum for it.

Please reconsider, in the past I used Sphinx which had this built in, but it is no longer maintained.

I will probably still switch to SimplePortal and just handle downloads as links within a forum - but this is far from ideal!

Using SP already on one of my sites and besides this issue I am very happy with it.

What about making the privat download mod available to donators?  I would be up for that!
