Title: Remove SP Copyright
Post by: kaamaru on June 16, 2010, 08:29:03 AM
Can you please confirm that removing the Simple Portal copyright is illegal? I want to prove it to one of my members who does not believe me.

Here's the topic: http://ihackmyi.com/iphone/index.php/topic,20812.msg325842.html

The SimplePortal copyright is under the same license as Simple Machines.

Removing the SP copyright is like removing the SMF copyright.

Thanks, although I only made the iPhone / mobile theme. Dziner Studio made the rest!

All submissions to the modification site on Simple Machines gives the submitter the option to release said modification under the Simple Machines license.

In a legal stance, it is illegal to remove a mod author's copyright without consent from said author or by purchasing a copyright removal plan (if such one exists, which it doesn't for SP). However in light of this, Simple Machines will not be responsible in enforcing their license over third parties.

I personally would think that a modification as large as SimplePortal is deserving of having its own preset copyright as it makes quite a few changes and the team here works hard at what they do. If it's viewed as a cheap "plugin" like your user is stating, then feel free to remove it. I know I myself won't be giving you any support here, and I'm sure no one else will either.

I can confirm it. What ccbtimewiz said here is pretty much the gist of it.

Have your member email info@simpleportal.net for more information, if they wish to get an "official" (as if my reply here isn't) response.

Marking this as solved.

As already stated. Removing the SimplePortal copyright is not legal. If you do so, you will not receive support here or at SM.org.

Thank You all. Don't worry, I was never planning on removing the copyright even if it was legal. I was just trying to prove a point. You guys are doing a great job and deserve a Copyright for all your hard work.
