thats not it,   SP cannot be installed on a phpbb board because SP take a lot of SMF base, see this reply:

it will have to be completely rewrite of SP code, not gonna happen.

Porting SimplePortal to phpBB would be a lot of work - as 130860 said it would be a complete rewrite. SimplePortal is not abstracted enough from the SimpleMachines framework within SMF to port to another framework/software without recoding everything.

I can't speak for the other team members/developers, but there are good reason why I use SMF not phpBB. For example, if phpBB3 still lacks a decent mod installer/package manager, then I personally believe that its not worth creating mods for it (or even using it for that matter). On that note, its been a while since I had a look at AutoMod. Still, its something that is needed in the core of any php framework/software.

Besides, phpBB already has portals for it, although I haven't actually looked at any of them in depth.
