It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

You want custom image background?
For the body, you can use a custom body class, and use CSS to make it just like the "normal" one (windowbg), but with your desired background URL.
Note, though, that, for CURVE, windowbg is a little complicated, what with the topslice and botslice.

You would use the same approach with the h3.catbg that is used for the block header.
And, of course, there has been a slight change to the CURVE theme in RC4.

You can put all this new css into portal.css, if you like.

and when you put it into the main css, does it get copied over when you upgrade the software?

Any changes you make in portal.css will get removed whenever you update SimplePortal. So it is a good idea to copy these changes into a file of "stuff to add to portal.css", that you can just copy and paste following upgrades. The same portal.css can generally be used with all themes.

You may be on to something with main.css -- although it changed from RC3 to RC4, it is unlikely to be entirely replaced very often.

The choice is yours.
