Title: Anti-spam measures
Post by: ccbtimewiz on November 11, 2008, 07:21:24 PM
Due to the large amounts of spam-bots that have been registering here at SP.net and with direct relation to this post (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=273816.msg1793987#msg1793987) on the SMF site, we have installed anti-bot software to our registration form.

Please be aware this was done to keep the forums nice and tidy so we can provide quality replies with quality speed.

If you're having difficulties with signing up for the site, please don't hesitate to contact the project management for assistance. :)

Hi - I have just started a forum and yes you do need anti spam these days - Can you please tell me where I can obtain such software and your experience with it.

I wanted to use Aweber as a registration notification to help cut spam and to hold 1000's of members - Do you know a way to integrate Aweber  to members accounts

Thanks brian

I'm sorry, but we don't offer solutions for anti-spam measures. This article was to inform the community about the steps we've taken to protect them.

If you want to find resources for your SMF board, a good place to look would be http://simplemachines.org.

I think the captchas can at least keep away all the bots!

The anti-bot software is out of date, had you noticed this announcement was made two years ago when I was still a developer for SP. :P

For any WP blogs you're running, akismet is the standard, not sure about the other platforms.
It has the advantage of being able to block future activity based on a particular url known to be spamming, though this, of course means that anyone could spam any competitor's blog URL all over the internet and get them blocked by akisment, so it's not an ideal solution

just ask questions only people who are interested in what your site's specific genre means and change it regularly. no amount of spam progs will keep paid human spammers who are paid to sign up. recaptcha ive noticed lately when testing it gives out really difficult spelling checks for average, casual users so you can say goodbye to them, anti spam progs like stop spammer prevents ppls ip ranges from registering and a lot of the ranges include a wide majority of possible legit members. give out 3 questions which are easy for real members to answer. :) just my advice

I use for antispam two mod:

reCAPTCHA for SMF (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1044)
and SFS_StopForumSpam (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1519)

and after this, mail confirmation after registration.
Trust me reCAPTCHA is not enough to stop all spam.

This is the best antispam for SMF that I am find.  :D
