No forum links in some themes
« on: July 26, 2009, 01:40:27 PM »
Hi all, I just installed SP and cant believe the amount of possible changes to my forum that I can make with it. Can't wait to get into it in detail later.

After installation I noticed a couple of things. One is that in some of my themes there is no forum tab in the menu. I assume that this is a common problem with an easy fix to the individual themes themselves.

The other problem is that I have a newsbox in SMF and when I installed SP I now have two newsboxes on the home page. How do I get the SMF newsbox off the home page but still keep it on the rest of the pages.

Hope it is OK to post two problems in one post. Will limit it to one in future.
Thank you,
Scott

For Forum button issue:

http://simpleportal.net/index.php?topic=148.0

For newsbox:

It sounds like the theme unusually has the newsbox in index.template.php. Does disabling News block in SimplePortal work for you?
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

Wow, that was quick. I'm liking this forum.

As for the newsbox. I like the placement of the newsbox in the home page that SP shows. I was hoping that the one that is used by SMF would be easy to just not show in the home page. I can always just turn off the newsbox in SP if it is to much of a problem.
Thank you,
Scott

Well, you can attach your index.template.php file and I'll have a look at it.

You mean even in the default theme SMF newsbox is displayed on all pages? May I get a link to your forum?

Simple Portal appears in all themes to me, at the very least.

An alternative would be, like I previously mentioned, FireFTP (an add-on for Mozilla Firefox).

I believe the "news box" you're talking about is either the default news box that shows on every SMF theme up top, or the newsfader. Most likely not the latter.

If that's the case, disabling news would kill it. However I am about 99.9% sure that would also cease SP's news block as well. Regardless, give it a try and see if it works.

If I'm off-course as to what you're trying to do, give me a heads-up. Because I can help you remove that single excess newsline without having to disable news.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to go download the FireFTP after I post this and delete my file zilla. Don't know what happened to it. It started out with just once in a while screwing up the code then it turned to every time I use it.

SP shows up on all themes ok but the forum button is not showing on most themes. I got one edited and working before my ftp problem got bad. The defalt core theme worked from the beginning.

As far as the newsbox the one I wanted to get rid of is the SMF default on top. I wanted to keep it everywhere else except the home page. If that cant be done I guess I could try and get rid of it and just use the SP newsbox if possible. I have already tried to disable it in SFM but like you said that disables it in SP as well.
Thank you,
Scott

For the "forum" button, you must edit every single theme's index.template.php. There isn't anyway around that except if you update to SMF 2.0 (as SMF 2.0 stores the button lists in Subs.php, so every theme has the same buttons).

As for news, it's actually.. possible, to be honest. Though, like before, I need to edit every single index.template.php you have to reflect what you want.

Just add a conditional statement to hide the default SMF newsbox if the ?action parameter is empty.

Well if I have to edit every theme then I suppose I can live with it for a while. Got enough to do at the moment.

That fireftp worked like a charm. I can't believe I spent at least 7 hours thinking I was screwing up somehow trying to add the forum buttons. Feel good about what I did though. First time I had to alter the code for something that was not told exactly what to replace on one of my forum buttons and got it right. Don't know how to write code yet but I'm starting to learn how it works and read it a bit better. 8)

I had this working at one time but had to load up the original templates due to a realy bad mistake I made and didn't back up. Learned my lesson there. Anyway I have tried to get the forum button to work two times and could not get it to work again. Did exactly what I did the first time and can't figure out what I did wrong. It is the hfg3 theme. Attached is the templates that I have tried to change. Bottom two are the original templates. Can someone tell me what I did wrong?

Thank you,
Scott
