Shall I bother with some sort of flash support for old browsers or just drop flash support altogether?
Older browsers will not be able to play audio tags nor javascript Audio (essentially the same thing).

I would drop it. I'm getting lots of warnings now on my browsers about playing flash - Opera wont play it by default (after installing flash player) or ask me. I thought it was going to be ditched by now.
I guess phone browsers get updated so you are dealing with a very small number of old PCs and laptops.
Everyone is a volunteer here so please try and make a small donation to keep the Simple Portal website running

From what I have read on the net, Adobe Flash support will cease in 2020.
I did some digging/reading and discovered that HTML5 support within browsers surfaced in 2014 after its initial stable debut.
Also I did some testing of older browser versions (actual testing of exe's & not emulation) and discovered that even browser versions released just after post HTML5 support have older SSL/TSL encryption protocols that are not compatible with the current ones.
In other words.. browser versions prior to HTML5 support are not even able to view most websites of today that force SSL such as this website.

I was originally working on a flash fallback but due to the above notations it seems fruitless.
A beta for testing will be available on my website later this week for those that are interested.
MP3 files seem to be most compatible with the major browsers as not all file formats are supported.
Javascript rendering does allow me to specify multiple file types that it attempts sequentially dependent on browser file support.
However I have decided just to stick with a mp3 restriction as any modern browser version within the last few years should support it.
It will include approx. 25 mp3 sound effects and have the option to upload more or delete existing ones less a single default.
Look to my download section later this week for its release.
