Unwanted blocks when adding articles
« on: January 12, 2012, 04:14:04 PM »
I recently decided to add a few articles to the portal...however, when I select the topic I want to add as an article...the navigation and donation blocks I created appear on the page to select the category for the article.  These are the only two blocks that appear there.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

I used advanced settings for these two blocks and they should only appear on the portal page.  Yet, when I want to add an article...they appear.

I'm not sure what you're asking...

I joined your site if you can give me example over there, I'm sure we could figure it out.

I'm saying that whenever I want to make a topic an article...there are two blocks that appear in the left column of the page when I click the button to "Add as Article".

I have specified in SP's settings that these blocks should only appear on the portal page.  However, the two blocks I have mentioned always show up when I click the button.

I can understand why the blocks show up because the link to add an article is as follows:  http://xxxxxxxx.xxx/index.php?action=portal;sa=addarticle;message=xxx

It would seem the "Add as Article" button is configured with the "action=portal".  Since I want those blocks to show up on the portal....they will appear.  Why none of the other blocks I have configured to show on the portal page are NOT showing confuses me.

I have seen this problem many a time.

And here is why.

Try this: http://xxxxxxxx.xxx/index.php?action=portal

That's your portal. Your advances settings specifically say they are allowed to show up for the portal page.
So Simple Portal is doing exactly what you told it to do.

Only that's not what you want.
This is a funny little feature.  Perhaps one would even call it a bug.  In fact, I have reported it as a bug just now.
http://simpleportal.net/index.php?issue=455.0

Here's how to work around it.
If you have used Advanced Options to show a block on the portal, and are now troubled because that block is showing up on the Add Article page, simply type the following into the Custom Display Options box: -~sa|addarticle

That will take care of the addarticle subaction. If the block pops up at any other inappropriate moments, you can handle it with a similar custom display option.
I hope you won't mind that I've moved your issue to bug reports.

Thank you...that worked.

I don't mind, at all, that you added it as a bug.  I appreciate you taking the time to fully explain it to me.

Great! When Sinan gets a chance to review this, we'll see whether he views this behavior as a bug or a feature.

That's good.  It is a small thing, but can be very confusing to new users.

It's good to know this will be addressed in the next version.  Thanks, [SiNaN].

Question, though...

If I'm adding more than one custom display option...how is that entered into the field?  I mean...when I add a custom display option and want to add another for that same block...do I clear the entry already in the box...or, is there something else I need to be aware of?

Thanks, in advance...

You can add as much as you want separating them by commas. Like:

Code: [Select]
~sa|articles,~page|new,projects,-market
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

Thank you, [SiNaN]...That'll do it....but, I still don't get it.

I have a mod (action=kb) that I want a certain block to appear on.  So, in this field I type ~action|kb and the block appears on all kb pages.  However, if I don't want it to appear on this page (xxxx://glitchpc.net/index.php?action=kb;area=addknow;cat=0) how would that be coded?

You can try

~action|kb,-~cat|0

Or you could try

~action|kb,-~area|addknow

I'm not sure which one is correct for you, since I am not familiar with "kb".
