The Infamous 500 Error of Demise
« on: December 30, 2012, 10:39:54 PM »
Good evening Simpleportal!

I know you all are probably tired of people coming here with 500 errors, but please hear me out. I have been tearing my hair out for the past couple of days! I really want to install simpleportal onto my forums site but it yields in the 500 internal error every time! I just want to go ahead and let the community know that I am no where in any shape or form whatsoever skilled in the website business.

I go to packages, select SimplePortal, then click on install. Everything says success, so then I type in my FTP information, and test the connection. Connection works, then I click on "Install". This is where it gets tricky. It almost immediately opens the next page, giving me some kind of error that says something isn't writable (sorry, that may not be the exact error, for I will right the error down next time). I am almost positive this is an issue with permissions.

I changed back all directories to 755 and all files to 644 manually through Filezilla. Unfortunately the problem still persists. I read a couple of other threads here on simpleportal and found that it somehow changes the root's permission to 777 (I think) and I have not the slightest idea on fixing that. I have contacted my host (ipage.com) two times to fix it, and they kindly have. I just tried installing and now they have to fix it again  :'(

This is very frustrating for me, considering I am not the brightest when it comes to websites. I appreciate all responses and the time people take into providing me with a solution for my problem. Thank you all very much.

Best regards.

Ahh. Upon further searching and strenuous amounts of time reading, I can assume it has to do with my host, as can be seen here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=485398.0

I am going to look into a different host just so I can run this mod. Can anybody recommend me a good host?

Thanks as always.

Upon further speculation; I have decided to stay with ipage.com
I have managed to install the simpleportal mod and I will post what I did in order for it to work.
- I uninstalled SMF completely
- I reinstalled SMF in a different directory root/forums
- I downloaded and uploaded simpleportal via package manager
- I installed, no flaw.

ou could have just uninstalled all the packages and then installed the portal

and then reinstall the packages  happened to me before so you just have to mix up the order of the packages
