Post approval is a real turn-off
« on: August 22, 2013, 06:42:27 PM »
I started a thread because I have some issues with my SimplePortal installation on my SMF forum.
Now, I understand that staff cannot be present all the time. However, having to wait a day for a post to be approved combined with the fact that this site is not visited often by the regulars either is a major turn-off for me.

Obviously preventing spam in the support section has a much higher priority than getting an answer out to those who are seeking assistance.

Considering we are all volunteers with Real Lives outside the internet do you really expect people to jump every time a person posts a new topic?

I usually pop in on a daily basis and try and help where I can.Ooh there is also that annoying substance which is known as a Timezone. Have you considered that too?
Daily backups mean less headaches

Block Set Up

I may be no coding expert but I am willing to help where I can.

Which board did you post in that was approval needed?

Did I say any such thing anywhere? You may want to re-read the post...

Ooh there is also that annoying substance which is known as a Timezone. Have you considered that too?
Oh well, gosh. I suppose that the timestamp on the post doesn't say anything about timezones...

In the "Install and Upgrade" board. It's a reply to what you and [SiNaN] posted.

...and somehow you think that being a ripe prick to those who do help out here is going to get you your answer quicker?  Hmmm... your logic is flawed.

I think the original poster is raising a valid concern. So let's all calm down. :)

Due to the excessive time we had been spending on fighting with spam, we've a mod here that requires approval for the posts that contains links from users that doesn't meet a definite post count requirement. You're right in that you shouldn't have to wait your post to be approved if you're seeking support. I apologize.

To prevent false positive cases (like yours) I had designed the mod to make sure the link isn't considered spam if the linked site is an SMF install. There seems to be a problem with that part of the mod which has caused this issue. Sorry for the inconvenience.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

Wait.

You made a mod that can detect an SMF install in a link?!?!?!
I so need a copy of that for BK Modding's web host....LOL

Okay, so that explains why I needed to ask my question.
The OP's post that was caught, should not have been.
I knew there was something off about post approval, especially in install board...LOL

It's not actually a mod but part of a mod. It just checks if the linked site is an SMF forum or not.

I just checked the code again and the problem was your site didn't like the mod making a visit without providing a user agent. I made sure the request is accompanied by a valid user agent now and tested it with your site. It's all working fine, without problems now.

Not knowing you had implemented a check for SMF forum presence in posted links, this all makes sense now. No need to apologise as we all try to reduce spam and learn things at the same time.
Thanks for your assistance.
