SMF 2.0.6 SMP 2.3.5 problems
« on: January 21, 2014, 02:28:28 PM »
I am not new to this simple portal, and I love using this to give a nice organized look to my site, but this has never happened to me before.

When I upload the package through the SMF Package Manager and choose the smp_2.3.5.rar file from my desktop and click upload, I get a white screen without errors.

Here is a recording of my problem.

I can answer any and all questions you might have.

You are saying that, as soon as you upload the package to your website, Browse Packages seems to stop working.
ONce you delete the SMF 2.3.5 file from the packages folder, everything works again.

* What method did you use to get the package to your desktop?  It looks like you used FTP. What FTP setting did you use?  Text or Image? (though this really should cause an error instead of a white screen).

* Why not try SMF Package Manager's inbuilt tool for downloading a package? That should make sure that it is downloaded properly.

* Finally -- when you get the white screen, have you tried "view source" to see what might actually be on the page that you cannot see?

Thanks for providing some more information we can use to help you out.

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?

I resolved the issue. I stopped working on packages after I couldn't figure out the issue (SimplePortal was the first package I tried installing) so I decided to get started on other packages.

I deleted the .zip for simpleportal from my FTP and the package manager starts working again. I tried installing a shoutbox and the same issue happened.

I went on SMF (there's no way that multiple packages are having issues and messing up my forums, it had to be internal.)

Turns out that the host im using limits my "unlimited" data and when i upload a package, it tries to load too many scripts at once and it just shuts me down (White screen).

I was able to solve my issue, reloaded my forums after changing some files in the FTP and bingo! My package manager :D

Thank you for trying to help me out though, I very much appreciate it.

I am very glad you contacted your host, because I had absolutely NO IDEA what was causing your problem.
Cheap web hosts do limit your "unlimited" data.  They have to, or they couldn't survive in your business.
"Unlimited" data is unlimited in a limited sense.

I'm glad you were able to figure out how to work around the problem and get SimplePortal running.

If you had a "too many scripts at once" problem with the package manager, it may be that, if you try to run an AJAX-based shoutbox, you will run into problems, if the shoutbox refreshes itself automatically, and you have several people with open browser windows to your shoutbox at one time, all refreshing frequently.

Good Luck!

I hope you won't mind that I have marked your topic solved.
