Why use shoutbox or article blocks
« on: July 31, 2015, 02:03:00 PM »
I have read the documentation on blocks and am using them on my site for recents posts, catergories and calender.
I do have two questions as I find the corresponding documentation limited

Why use articles in blocks?  What is the difference between and an article and a posts?
What are the uses of a shoutbox? Are they short post?

Thx in advance

PS Not simpleportal related but love to know where the smilies come from :D

Hi and welcome to SimplePortal!

True. You need to dig around to find things, but it's a nice idea to surprise the user with a lot of additional things that he never thought about ;)

Why use articles in blocks?
To have a list of important topics somewhere (ex: Board Index), somewhat like a CMS site (such as WP or similar).

What is the difference between and an article and a posts?
An article IS a topic.

What are the uses of a shoutbox? Are they short post?
I wanted to link you to the Wiki but that article is just... Ugh, I can't say it. Well, it's "not good" ;D
A shoutbox is a place where user can message quickly, without using PMs and with less privacy, but it's a lot faster and handy than PMs.

Thx in advance
You're welcome :)

I *think* they come from this theme, but I don't know much more to be honest, maybe SiNaN or Eliana remember...

You're welcome! Actually I didn't notice that it was in Custom Coding... Well, hope you don't mind if I move it to normal Support as it seems more appropriate to me. I also mark it as solved as I think you got how it works seeing your reply ;)

would be shouted at!
Please don't, it is our policy not to treat people like that ;) Can't speak for other sites but that's how we roll.

Feel free to post again if you need to! Glad you enjoy SimplePortal!

Regards

I too, often wondered that. Maybe the SP team can make a smiley pack with them for people to download. ;)

My forum is for vintage RV enthusiasts.  Many have excellent, technical information on a wide variety of topics which are of common interest, so they write tech articles.  I show this in the Articles SP block because it draws attention to them.

The SP shout box has been a great asset in our community.

I have used two shout boxes.  One for general chit-chat, and one for emergency assistance. Members who have broken down on the road or need directions because they've become lost in the middle of the night have been literally saved by other members in the area, or have been given real-time assistance to diagnose problems and often repair them as well and get back on the road again.

 ;D

The emergency chat thing is total genius, and so nice from other members to assist each other! Rare to find such things on the interwebz nowadays, a big thumbs up for your community is due.
