index file deleted
« on: November 19, 2015, 05:48:43 PM »
I now have a new problem. Everything was working fine until tonight, it appears that my hosting company have deleted an index.php file. The forum is still running, but there's no access to the home portal page and also no simpleforum admin access button. Unfortunately no backup was done.

I tried to delete the simpleportal package to reinstall again, but the deletion failed due to an index.php error.

Is there a fix? or is it a case of start all over again?

They deleted the main index.php? You forum shouldn't be running if so. Try uploading the index.php from the SMF installation package to your forum directory.

If you keep having problems, I'd go to simplemachines.org and ask on the support boards. It's really an SMF-level problem. They also have a board full of hosting providers so you can switch from a host the arbitrarily deletes files.
Ms. Eliana TamerinIt should be painfully obvious by now that I don't respond to support PMs. Don't send me PMs for support. They will be ignored and deleted, post on the Support Boards to get support.

The SMF index.php is still in the root folder 'forum' it's the index.php in the public_html folder that's been deleted.
When the SimplePortal package is installed is the index.php file script modified?

So, just to be sure, your file structure is something like this:

public_html
>> index.php (the missing one)
>> forum
>> >>> index.php

I have no idea why this would affect your forum. This is definitely an SMF support question, and not SP.

Yes, SP modifies the SMF index.php, but it wouldn't modify one in your public_html directory if that's not where SMF is located.

I found an old index.php file on a test board, so it's all running ok again. It was the index.php in the root 'forum' folder that was causing the problem.
Learnt the lesson.. to make backups more often  :-[

Like Eliana said you are better off asking on simplemachines.org, but even more ask your host, they shouldn't delete/move/eat stuff without your consent unless you are doing something illegal (and I believe it's not the case).
If you are looking for a good host my site is with these guys and I don't have any problems whatsoever, just be sure to avoid GoDaddy, Hostgator and similars.
On another note, replacing your index.php with an old test one is *very much likely* (if not surely) going to cause issues and won't fix the problem, your host might eat the file again.

Regards
Have you tried SimplePortal Documentation before asking? ;)
