Occasional Chat/Shout box Issue
« on: December 23, 2018, 11:27:24 PM »
Hi Folks
New Zealand Local Weather Forum     http://www.localweather.net.nz/smf/
SMF 2.0.15     SimplePortal 2.3.7
Also
Simple Audio Video Embedder | Powered by SMFPacks SEO Pro Mod
Sitemap | Powered by SMFPacks Mentions Pro Mod

The issue:
Chat/Shout Box occasionally won't update after enter/clicking on Shout,
the working circle arrow appears, runs for a while, then stops, block does not update,
further chat/shouts won't take either until cache flush/fresh browser start,
has appeared the last few months,
only with 2 users AFAIK,
in my case, it happens after trying to include a hyperlink, plain text - no problems.

Cpanel under SMF reveals we have chat & Packages/shoutBox folders.
chat error log file slice attached (these lines appear in a a rolling repeat)
There are 2 other error_log files in our file system but they seem to be unrelated.

Any advice/suggestions appreciated,
many thanks & cheers

Update
We now have 4 members with chat/shout issues.
2 of us are local, one is UK, the other Canada.
2 of us run XP, one a mix of later WIn OS + Linux, & I think the other is a Linux user.

Interesting that my basic localhost version of SMF does not exhibit any similar issues.
So perhaps it is something to do with our web host setup?

No responses as yet, not even a suggestion.
Cheers

I looked at your error file which seems to be concerning Ajax Chat.
3rd party chat/shout boxes are not related to Simple Portal.
Whomever is currently supporting that chat box is the one that can provide support for it.

You have the option of using Simple Portal's built in shoutbox that we do support.

Hi again Folks

My situation: New to admin, & very new to SMF stuff, still finding my way.

@Chen Zhen. The Ajax Chat thing seems to be an earlier instance. From the files . .
    version.txt - 0.8.2 SMF
    readme.txt -
     * @package AJAX_Chat
     * @author Sebastian Tschan
     * @copyright (c) Sebastian Tschan
     * @license GNU Affero General Public License
     * @link https://blueimp.net/ajax/
The error log file has new entries this year, but I can't see where we might be using it, so I wonder if robots/hackers are checking it out.
Thinking I will move it  to another folder & see what happens, maybe we can delete it without any great consequence.
I could also add it to our robots.txt file. Any thoughts will be welcome.

Meantime I found we had reached max no of posts in both shoutboxes so ran a prune & also changed the auto refresh down to 10.
This has allowed our local members to shout & add links, I have yet to check with our overseas members.

@Ninja ZX-10RR ♦. Thanks, I had found 2 of those threads, both appeared unrelated to our issue. The last one & oldest appeared more relevant.

So, I think the issue is mostly sorted now, a few nagging questions still rattling around.

Many thanks to you both.
Cheers

I used that chat on my site. awhile back. You can find support for it here if you don't already know that:

Thanks @Skhilled
We don't use Ajax Chat anymore, it is uninstalled but the package remains on our site. Will look at deleting in due course.

Since my last update, we had 1 instance where shoutbox stopped working.
I managed to get it going again after deselecting "Check Custom forms"  in Clean Talk. No issues since.
Our web host thought it was a conflict with the Firewall plug in.

The main thing looks to be - keep an eye on the number of shouts & either prune old stuff or increase the limit.

Cheers all

To how much can you increase the limit and still be in the safe zone btw?

Not sure @Dannis, like I said earlier, new to this stuff, still finding my way.
Currently we run 2 shoutboxes, 1 is a general weather thing for anyone set at 1000, the other is a members only chat area set at 300.
No problems so far as long as I keep an eye on it & prune when nearing those limits.
