[PAID] Enhanced RSS Block
« on: December 28, 2008, 03:47:15 PM »
[PAID - $40]

I would like enhanced RSS features. What I'm looking for is the ability for members to enter (at least) 1 RSS feed in their profile somewhere. Then there would be a block somewhere in their profile which would show the titles and possibly a teaser (just as the RSS's show now on the portal page). And finally there could be a block added to SP's home page where admin could show the (##) most recent user RSS updates. For a side box it would probably be good to just show the feed title with [read more], for a top/bottom box it would be good to show the feed title and maybe a teaser then [read more] as it does now. Basically the update box would act just as the feed box does not, but it would show a mix of users feeds just depending on the which were most recent.

Sample inside User's profile

{User}'s RSS Feed(s)
{Feed Title Which Links To Actual External Feed} OR
{Feed Title Which Links To A Page With A Summary Of Updated Posts To This Feed}

Sample Side Box

{Feed Title}
 - [User Name]
(x5 or 10)

Sample Top/Bottom Box

{Feed Title} [User Name]
 - {Teaser Text}

I'm currently using Drupal to accomplish this, but I would prefer to use SMF if possible. If it gives any ideas, below are some samples of what I currently have. What I'm asking for above doesn't have to be as feature rich, anything helps.

[example of top/bottom box info] Here's a sample of how the feeds look when all coming together on my main page, which Drupal has no way to limit teaser text which would be really nice if this was applied to SP...

[Sample of the info that could be used in a side box, exept each title would be a single line instead of groups of 3] Here's a sample of how the overview looks with all blogs...

[Sample of what would be nice to have in each user's profile - again Drupal doesn't let me modify teaser text leanght] Here's a sample of a members specific feed page...

(as you can see, credit is given to their original RSS feed link)

I won't be able to help you with that sorry. All I can say is there will be some improvements about this block in the next release.

You can also try the Help Wanted board in www.simplemachines.org.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

You will be able to do most of these with SP 2.2.

+ Show only titles if you want
+ Limit items if you want
+ Limit text shown if you want
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

Does that mean it will remove images? For my purposes, and possibly others, allowing images (and possibly embedded videos) might be a good thing.

As you can see on my sample links about, the software I use on that site allows embedded images as well as videos/hand replays.

Images and videos are too much for a portal block to me. If you need advanced feeds, take a look at RSS Feed mods for SMF.

The best option would be, create a dedicated board for your Feeds and show them on your portal with board news block. ;)

OK, I've set one up for strange news. The last block on the bottom of my page is a Board News Block which is using the latest posts from my Strange News board.
