SimplePortal doesn't change any theme settings, it should also work with any theme, although you will have to add a 'Forum' button. (This tutorial should help you with that.)

Essentially SimplePortal only adds the portal, the ability to put blocks on any page of your forum, and a section in the admin area that you can use to configure your SimplePortal install (almost every page/action has its own popup help box, if you get stuck).

There are many other smaller related features that SimplePortal adds, but those are the main ones. This post covers some of the features in a bit more detail.

:( Well here I am, head in hand, I've read it all, twice and it made as little sense the second time around.

If you need clarification on anything then tell me what you are having trouble with and I can try to explain it clearer. :)

Thanks for the offer, I'm sure when I dip into this I may have many questions. 1 to start, if I install simpleportal, will it affect all themes installed or will manual edits have to be made to all available themes?

Well I did the thing today and installed SimplePortal here http://www.international-star-riders.com/nsg/nsgforum/index.php
But when I use Black Rain theme the menu disappears. Waz up with that? Menus work in the core(default) theme fine and even added the Forum button without me having to edit anything.

SimplePortal doesn't affect all installed themes (only the default), however it has so few template edits that normally the only issue occurs with the 'Forum' button.

From looking at your site, it appears that you have managed to add the 'Forum' button for the BlackRain theme. At least it works for me (as a guest).

The tutorial below shows you how to add the 'Forum' button to different themes:
