Hello,

I am encountering serious page loading issues in IE 6. I run a smf 2.0 rc 1-1. I have simple portal installed. IE fails to loads the page when simple portal is on. But, when I disable the simple portal, the forum loads loads pretty quickly.

I am confused what has to be done. I don't want to take out simple portal out because of this issue. Is there any solution. my site is http://andhraconnect.com

Okay, I am not sure what is causing this issue either.

When I tried to replicate it:
1) On the computer I am using it works fine with IE, loading suprisingly fast for my dodgy computer.
2) On my better computer (a different computer) IE froze when I tried to load the site and it wouldn't even load it at all.

Both computers are running the same version of IE, with windows XP and service pack three.

It possible that the 'sp_pngfix.js' file could be causing the issue, try removing your '/Themes/default/sp_pngfix.js' file. Thats just a guess though, it may not fix anything.

Yes, I also noticed IE froze and got hanged. Had to end all the process. Should I remove the file and check?

If I remove that file, will it affect any other processes of the forum. Plz Help

That file is only related to fixing the '.png' files for IE 5 and IE6. It should only effect those browsers, so that is why I am suggesting that it could help.

You could rename it instead, that would have the same effect.

Sorry Nathaniel,

I dont see any file in themes/default with that name. I even looked into theme/default/scripts.

Any other way to work around???

For SMF 2.0 versions, SimplePortal uses the built-in png fix. Try changing the name of Themes/default/scripts/png_fix.js file to something else and making hard refresh.

Thanks Sinan.. It worked now.. The page loads fairly fast in IE now..Thanks a lot..

I hope renaming png_fix.js would not affect any other parameters. Still, I have a little problem, The logo which I use is a transparent logo but it appears white in IE.. Any solutions..

Renaming the 'png_fix.js' file shouldn't cause any non-display errors for your site. Although for IE6 it will mean that your '.png' images don't have any transparency (the issue you have with your logo).

Now that we know that the 'png_fix.js' file was the issue, the fun bit is trying to work out a solution. This is where my javascript skills totally fail.

Also I couldn't replicate this issue on my localhost which is a problem.

We can still try some troubleshooting:
Did you add your logo after or before you installed SimplePortal? Try renaming that file how it was before 'png_fix.js' and then temporarily removing your logo or blocks to see if that helps.

This is not something we can fix. It looks like your browsers doesn't have the JavaScript enabled. I've seen installing SUN Java fixing the issue:

A couple of my members let me know yesterday that IE6 was locking up when they tried to mark messages as read. Or, the site would not load in IE6. One of them had the latest Java library, so that doesn't seem to fix the problem. They were not having problems with the site prior to my installing SP 2.2.2. So, something in that version is causing the problem. I have inhibited sp_pngfix.js and will see if that helps. In the interim, I am advising folks to upgrade to IE8 or Firefox. However, that is not going to stop folks from being driven away because the site won't load. If IE6 wasn't such a prevalent browser, I'd worry less.

Ok, disabling sp_pngfix.js has restored functionality for IE6...at least it did for the member who reported the problem. I hope it also helps the 36% of my visitors who are still using IE6.

Moved to the Bug Reports. There are some known issues with png fix.

Yes, we'll be using 8-bit PNGs with alpha transparency, which have support in IE6.

Good. Instead of promoting ie 7 or 8 to everyone.

This upgrade could solve most of our issue.
