Installed SimplePortal but...what now?
« on: July 21, 2009, 11:27:46 AM »
I recently took over ownership of a site with SMF. I tried, last night, to install Simple Portal through the SMF package manager. After hours of fighting with the "wrong permissions for Packages folder" issue, I finally got it to where it seemed to install. went all the way down and asked about theme installation. Now, in the package manager, it shows as installed, but I can't find anywhere to set it up.

What am I doing wrong? I'm learning all this as I go along. I just took the site over yesterday and am still learning, so it may just be something simple.

Click the "Browse Packages" tab. Then scroll down until you see the mod, look to the far right, and you'll see a link saying "Apply Mod", click it.
Your mod should now be installed.

Already done. It told, and still tells me, it's installed.

Try refreshing your board to see if the simple portal comes up like that and make sure everything is install for starters and everything should work from there.I just install Simple Portal myself i am just trying to figure out how to get ruin of the simple port stuff in the box when  you first see the board.

I'm currently experiencing the same problem.

- Made a subdomain.
- Made a forum folder.
- Installed SMF 2.0 RC1.2 in the forum folder.
- Uploaded SP2.2.2 through package manager.
- Clicked Apply Mod.
- Got a screen with the changes it was going to do.
- Clicked Install Now

Et voila. It was installed. However there is no visible change whatsoever. When I try to uninstall it I get a red Test failed on every file modification it wants to undo, not sure if that could have anything to do with it but I found that to be strange.

At least I'm not the only one. I had the same issue. I went ahead with the uninstall and tried all over. It had the "Redirect" at the bottom, but just took me to my regular admin panel. No portal. :(

This happens when SMF is unable to apply the changes due to misconfigured permissions. See if this happens with other mods; if it does I'd say it's a general Package Manager issue, so beyond this mod.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

How do you mean the "incorrect permissions" part? I cannot imagine a chmod of 777 being inadequate to be honest. A friend of mine installed it the same way I did and it worked without a problem on his side. Sounds like it has to be some sort of server configuration I must be missing but I'd love to know what the correct way to go about installing it would be.

Other packages install without a problem by the way.

I just did the upgrade to RC1.2 Every other mod is installing correctly, so it seems to be installing, but the portal never show up either in the Admin or just going to the site.

I Remember a similar problem like this with the Shoutbox, as a standalone mod. When I couldn't see it, I had to check the permissions in the ACP, to make sure the membergroup permissions for all groups were set properly to display it.

That could be your issue as to why you haven't seen it yet. Sometimes, manual membergroup permission for a mod is required, before a correctly installed mod can be seen.

That's just what I know, so give it a shot and see what happens.

DarkValentine, how would I go about checking this? In the Package Manager > File Permissions tab everything is set to chmod 777 if that is what you mean? My user account is in the administrator group, so it should have (all) permissions.

I know this might sound stupid, but this does often work.
Clear your browsing history, and then see if you can see it.

I don't know about ViperChief but this one didn't do the trick for me.

Hi,

I have a same sort of issue. After installation it says it's all ok, but the mod doesn't appear anywhere. I checked the files, and came to notice that they are not changed (the files that should be changed by the mod). The files that only have to be uploaded by the mod (the SP lang files etcetera) they are there.

The portal worked in the past, but i uninstalled it, to install the newer version.

No dice. I've tried everything. No one else is seeing it either. :(

I did the install again. Here's my error log with some info:

Let's see. First, there's some permission denied for Subs-Packages. I just looked it's 777, so not sure what that's about. I looked both in the Admin panel and I SSH'd in and verified.

Here's some errors:

Code: [Select]
Apply Filter: Only show the errors with the same message
2: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource
Apply Filter: Only show the errors from this file
File: /usr/local/www/data/Sources/Subs-Package.php
Line: 2424

The permission denied and the above alternate several times. Towards the end, I get this:

Code: [Select]

Apply Filter: Only show the errors with the same message
2: Invalid argument supplied for foreach()
Apply Filter: Only show the errors from this file
File: /usr/local/www/data/Packages/temp/install2.php
Line: 332

Hopefully this can help someone help me.

How do you mean the "incorrect permissions" part?
I believe there may be some confusion between "membergroup permissions" and directory access permissions.  You need to check to see if the membergroups (Admin, Member, User or whatever you call them on your forum) are permitted to access the portal.

SimplePortal doesn't require permission for users to view the portal. If you see the SimplePortal copyright at the bottom of your forum, then you have the mod installed; if not, that means the mod is not installed at all.

In some cases Package Manager can report that mod was installed. However, it might not have been able to apply the edits due to incorrect file permissions. 777 doesn't always make it; try 644 or 755.

If it still fails, we can't do much about it. Only thing I can suggest would be installing the mod manually.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

Excuse me, but it sounds kind of stupid to say that you don´t support your own software when it doesn´t install decently for multiple people. Either way, I tried with filepermissions 644 and 755 which didn´t do the trick. I guess all I have left to do is install it manually but seriously, that sounds like a huge undertaking to perform everytime I would want to update my portal if you ask me...

Well, it works fine for me. Works fine for other ~2000 people. So it is something related to your configuration. And I'm not the one who coded SMF Package Manager.

Also "stupid" isn't the right word there, but anyway...

First off I'd like to say that I did not mean my comment as an attack or something like that. Rereading it I can understand if you took it like one, but I'm not a native English speaker, so I'm sorry if my wording is incorrect in some places. Eitherway, I can imagine it being something in the SMF package manager but seeing as how multiple people seem to have the problem there must be something that can be pinpointed as the issue.

I don't know if this has been noted yet, but as far as I can tell the existing files don't get updated. The new files are being placed in the temp directory in the Packages directory it seems, instead of where they should be.
