[2.3] Development Update I
« on: July 27, 2009, 12:13:37 PM »
I'm sure some of you may have been wondering what's happening with the development team in pink and in deep silence. (* [SiNaN] is trying to hide his post count.)

Anyway, the team has been working hard behind the closed doors and started counting back for the 2.3 release. So what's coming along?

The biggest change in this version will be more in the technical base of SimplePortal. We have tried to implement a partial MVC (Model-View-Controller) structure as much as possible. We had all our functions in four major files (SPortal, SPortalAdmin) with their templates separately, along with a subs file. Now we have a controller for admin and user end (PortalMain and PortalAdminMain) with separate files for each component (PortalArticles, PortalBlocks, PortalPages, PortalShoutbox and admin files for each). This made SimplePortal a lot more easy to expand with modules/components. So you can expect some exciting new features in the future.

Of course this release isn't all about architecture. As you may have noticed; half of the shouts we have in our shoutbox is about how to get the shoutbox code. So yeah, we are finally including this by default in SimplePortal. It will have a lot more features than the one you see currently here (like AJAX auto refresh/delete, BBC to allow, etc.), but still easy to use. The most exciting feature of the shoutbox for me is ability to create unlimited number of shoutbox(es?).

The other major feature we added, as you may already guess, is pages feature. It will allow you to add BBC, HTML and PHP pages and turn your forum into a web site. It pretty much works like blocks in design and has some cool features too, of course.

Apart from these, there are also many improvements to here and there, mostly with blocks and performance issues. I won't be listing them all, but you should be able to test them soon.

Lastly the biggest question; when we are releasing it? Well, just as of yesterday I have implemented the last major feature in the package and hopefully we will have the 2.3 Beta 1 released to our Beta Testers in a few days. As a developer, even I don't have an idea about the exact date. However, be assured that we are trying to get it out as soon as possible. Not because to stop the endless requests and to get rid of the great stress/pressure on us; but because we want you to meet with these awesome features.

And I know, you want some screenshots. Unfortunately, I don't have any at the moment. I'll let you see them live here when we update this site in a few days.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

As I promised, I've updated SP on this forum to 2.3 (pre)Beta 1.

Edit:

Also here is a test page for you to see pages feature:

I've not had a chance to even look at 2.3 - will pages have permissions eg. some not available to guests or certain membergroups?

Pages will be handled with the same permission system as blocks.
Ms. Eliana TamerinIt should be painfully obvious by now that I don't respond to support PMs. Don't send me PMs for support. They will be ignored and deleted, post on the Support Boards to get support.

Excellent. I can finally dump Deprecated's BakersDozen Pages and Robbo_s Custom Pages - nothing wrong with them but upgrades are getting laborious so two less mods to worry about.

Just need those independent, permissions based articles sorted (with an import feature from SMF Articles!) and SimplePortal takes over my forum...
