New to SP and SMF
« on: July 25, 2009, 09:14:46 PM »
Hi all, I am new and would like to have a simple explanation on how SP interacts with SMF. Do I need SP to make a lot of customizations to SMF? If I install it will it mess with the other mods and themes that I already have installed?

Would like to add a custom home page to my SMF forum and have the actual forum posts on another page. Do I need SP to do this or at least make it simple?

Thanks in advance,
Scott
Thank you,
Scott

1) SimplePortal doesn't make many changes to your themes, so it should work with almost any theme. If you are using SMF 1.1.x then you will need to add the 'Forum' button for any custom themes. (see the General Custom Theme Tutorial)

There could be install compatiblity issues with other mods, but those are easy to fix. Just ask for help in the Install and Upgrade board if you have issues with errors on installing SimplePortal.

2) SimplePortal does exactly that, it puts a portal on your front page, with a link to get to your main forum area.

There are so many things you can do with SMF It isn't even funny! You can install & modify new themes to suit your needs. I haven't quite perfected it but I'm working on it. You need Firefox or Opera to chat, but it's not bad.
