Chas

I'm running SP 2.3.1 on SMF 1.1.10 in Stand Alone Mode.

My members who use Internet Explorer have reported getting this error on the Portal page only, nowhere else on the site so it seems to be SP related. This error was not reported before SP was installed.

All other browsers tested and they don't display this error so it seems to only applies to IE. I can reproduce it on my IE too.

I have searched and seen similar messages reported here so, can I ask if this is a known bug? If so, is there a fix?

See it at www.fiftyplusforum.co.uk

Regards

Hal

Which file is that for? Can you please post the entire error message?

I can't replicate it on your site, viewing the portal as a guest.

Hmmm. I can replicate this using Internet Explorer 8 on two PCs (One Vista and One XP) on different IPs and either as a logged on member or as a guest. Here is how it appears:

You have to wait until the page fully completes loading before you see the error.

Nathaniel

Is it just IE 8? Can you replicate it with IE 6/7 or any other browser? I tested it with IE 6, will test with IE 8 and see what happens.

I can confirm this appears on IE7 and 8. Don't have any PC's or users running IE6, so can't confirm it on that version, sorry.

Btw, it says error 404 in IE7 rather then 403 in IE8.

Chas

Can I ask if any work has been done trying to find this Error on Line 403 error which ONLY occurs on my Home StandAlone Portal page in Internet Explorer, irrespective of version.

It's not a standard 403 or 404 HTTP error but an Error at LINE 403 or LINE 404. I have no idea how to diagnose this. Have tried disabling ALL blocks and also changed the permissions on various files.

Chas

I'm wondering if it's the way I have employed the StandAlone mode.

I made the changes to the PortalStandalone.php file and then copied this to the root of my website and renamed it index.php.

The main forum website/forum also uses index.php as the main forum page.

It this the recommended way to implement StandAlone mode? It seems to work OK but just gives the error in Internet Explorer.

Hal9000, look in your forum's Admin section under Forum > Attachments and Avatars > Avatar Settings and see if in the "External Avatars" section you are using the "Resize it with JavaScript" option for "If the avatar is too large...".  If you are using that setting, try changing it to "Let the HTML resize it".  You may have to uncheck the "Download avatar at given URL" box to be able to change settings.

Thanks LP, that seems to have fixed it, well on my IE8, I'll ask members to check with IE 7 and 6 (yes there are still a few out there using 6 according to the stats). Odd though that this problem didn't arise until I started using SimplePortal in StandAlone Mode, In FrontPage mode it was fine. However I and my members are grateful for your quick response.

No problem.  You might be able to test it yourself using this tool:

http://my-debugbar.com/wiki/IETester/HomePage

I use it to test my sites in multiple versions of IE.  It is not infallible, but it is a very handy tool.

Hey LP what a useful tool. It seems to prove that the problem has gone from IE6 thru IE8. Many thanks again.

Are you still having this issue? I wasn't able to reproduce it, but it looks like something related to image resize. Try disabling Admin > SimplePortal > Configuration > General Settings > Resizes images on portal setting and check if that fixes it.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

Hi SiNaN, Well it is sort of fixed by making the change to the image resize setting as detailed above but of course if I change it back the problem returns. It's odd that it only occurs on my stand alone forum and not on my test forums which are all on the same server. Still the forum is working OK so I'll mark it as solved.
