Shout box froze up my forum

I have two shout boxes, one for all and one for admin. When we used the admin box today it suddenly just kept refreshing and then it froze up every page it was on.

Now those pages of the forum won't load and are not accessible - among those the admin page. So - I can't get to admin to disable the shoutboxes. Is there a way to fix this through FTP? What files should I edit/remove in that case?

I'm using smf 1.1.10 if it makes a difference.

I'm very thankful for all help as this affects the whole forum!

Nathaniel

For now, disabling the shoutbox would make sense. Open up PhpMyAdmin (or any other tool that you have for editing your mysql database), go to the 'smf_sp_shoutboxes' table. Edit the relevant shoutbox and change the 'status' field to 0.

What is the exact error message that is being displayed by your forum? (before you make those changes)
What content was posted into the shoutbox, just before the issue started occuring? (you should be able to check this in the 'smf_sp_shouts' table)

THANK YOU! Sorry for shouting, but really, thank you!
Not only did this solve my problem quickly and easily, I learned something very useful too. I didn't know it was possible to edit like this, as I'm new to this and haven't worked with a database before.

I feel like I grown an inch!  :D

I'm sorry to say, I was to quick removing the shoutbox and forgot to look for the error message. Still, I believe it was the constant refreshing of the box that caused the problem.
In my forum, I didn't get an error page, only the page trying to load but nothing happening.

It was enough to remove the shoutbox that caused the problem, the other one is still there, working as it should.

Once more, thank you!

Nathaniel

Glad I could help. Although that didn't actually fix the entire problem, it only stopped it from occuring for the moment. ;)

Do you have any errors in your forum error log?

It would be good to try and debug the issue, so that we can resolve it, so that it won't happen again. Do any of the 'body' fields of the latest shouts from your admin shoutbox contain any odd bbc or anything else that may have caused an issue? (You can look them up in your 'smf_sp_shouts' table, the latest shouts will have the highest 'id_shout' field, although only the shouts with a 'id_shoutbox' value that matches your admin shoutbox are relevant)

I'll take a fresh look at it in the morning - it's very good advice  - but it's almost midnight here and my eyes are filled with sand, it feels like.

I'll come back to this thread tomorrow.
