[2.4] Development update.
« on: January 29, 2010, 07:53:20 PM »
Its has been a while since the last development update, and the last SimplePortal release.

Development has slowed with the holiday season (while I went on holidays and spent time partying ;)), but I should be moving faster now that the start of the uni year in australia is approaching.

The main feature addition for SimplePortal 2.4 will be forum independent articles, along with several different ways of displaying/publishing articles. There will also be numberous other bugfixes and feature improvements.

At the moment we are still hashing out the ideas for the Articles feature, so there is no set timeline for SP 2.4. This is a general update so that you know what is going on at the moment.

We may see a SP 2.3.2 version in the meantime, to fix some of the more important bugs that have been found.

Good stuff Nathaniel.

I now have over 300 Articles on SMF Articles, what are the chances of being able to import these into SP Articles?

Alternatively, will I be able to just copy across tables using PHP to avoid manually recreating the whole lot?

Best wishes

W

We haven't really looked at converting articles from SMF articles to the SP articles system, although I might write a custom script which does that. The database conversion process itself shouldn't be too difficult.

If you could that would be great.

Happy to make a donation to yourself, simpleportal or the Haiti UNICEF appeal as such a script would save me hours...

Aside from your shoutbox (best in the business) one of the things I REALLY like about Simple Portal is how you can assign exactly where each block will display.

I used and like Tiny Portal for years and my biggest problem with it is that to get the same content to display on specific sections required creating several instances of the same block to go everywhere.  Your solution is much more elegant, and I think compliments SMF 2 very well.

Thanks for all your hard work.  I'm using it on a very active site and our members appreciate it.

I guess 2.4 version will have a much much more powerful block display handling, probably the most powerful possible. ;)
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

- [Function] Allow custom reordering of articles.

Great work :)

Hello all...

What's the latest on 2.4 and improved articles functionality? Are we getting caught up waiting for SMF to move on from Release Candidates?

Edit: Just seen this topic Another [2.4] Development Update - no clues as to release date though?

Thanks

At this time, there is no news.

Our founder has been very busy as a core developer at SimpleMachines.org, while other obligations have been preventing our lead developer from volunteering the large chunks of time necessary to implement the planned improvements.

As soon as there is some news, you know there will be an update on this site.
Please to keep this website running, if you like SimplePortal, make a
one-time subscription. Thank you for your support.

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?

I noticed Sinan getting more involved over at SMF - good news as far as I'm concerned.  I can wait.

There haven't been much progress recently, indeed. But SimplePortal is not dead and there'll definitely be a 2.4.

There's something new, it's just slow. I'm sorry I can't say any more about that, Divecall, the devs will let the community know when they're ready. Just as you do, I want SP to continue to progress, and that's what the whole Team is aiming towards. We all mostly have limited time, and software is certainly more art than science (hence motivation and clarity of solutions come and go as they please), but I can certainly assure you that this project is not dead.
Ms. Eliana TamerinIt should be painfully obvious by now that I don't respond to support PMs. Don't send me PMs for support. They will be ignored and deleted, post on the Support Boards to get support.

Well, i hope too, that the project is not "dead"....And i think it quite living.

The last 2 Days, i was looking and reading here and on SMF.org about an "Article System".

You know, stuff, who turns SMF into a really good CMS-System (like vB was starting before...)

BUT I DIDN`T FIND SOMETHING USEFULL.

For me, an article System is/have:
- The possibility to navigate thru the Articles
- Separeted from the Board (not showing inside the regulary Forum)
- Placing inline Pictures
- Flexible in the layout
- ...

And it looks like that the next SP Version maybe have that!

Oh...BTW: A small update from time to time will show, that the project is living and will introduce new customer and the old one dont leaving and is a great way to beta-testing. Think about this!
