FaceBook Block
« on: January 18, 2010, 10:17:36 AM »
Sorry if I missed this, but I made a FaceBook Block for my SimplePortal....
I'm no php coder so if I can do it, you can too?

Did anyone create a mod for this yet? I saw 1 being worked on but I believe it was a pay mod...

SP makes these kind of blocks easy to build. LOVE IT!

What do you mean by Facebook block exactly? What does the block supposed to do?

SMF and Facebook integration is beyond the scope of this mod.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

Very sorry for my abscence!!!!

FaceBook has an app that you can use in a SP Block that lets you post from your website.....

I think I could make the block for everyone, but !

I think the code they give you is generated from your own FaceBook info....you have to be logged in to FaceBook to get the code generated for you....

I did the app, it works great, I have had no issues with it.......

If anyone wants to try it, I could walk ya through it...

This is not something that we intend to add to the SimplePortal core. Facebook integration is not something that every user of SP is likely to want to use.

If you have some code for a block, then feel free to post it into the Custom Coding board, then we can move it to the blocks/modifications board where others can make use of it.

Nathaniel, you guys make a superb product, who am I to say what you should do..

I applaud your work! :applause:

My 2 cents....Social networking is HUGE....much bigger than SMF, and I love SMF....

In my opinion, if you want to make SP different from the rest (TP, EZPORTAL, ETC) you give it what they don't....

 8)

And I know, if someone can do it, you guys can....

No big deal... My only reason for posting it is because you can take the developer apps these social sites offer, and they work superbly in the portal....

Walk me thru it. The Facebook app that is out does NOT work in SMF 1.1.11.  I am reluctant to upgrade for reasons I won't discuss here...so...if you can make something like that work in a block on 1.1.11 until SMF (or IF SMF) releases a stable 2.0, I'm all ears.

I'll tell you how I did it Dave....

I click the Create a Profile Badge on my FaceBook...in the left column....

Your then shown a page with a bunch of options/ways to put Facebook on your site....

I clicked the one that allows me to make posts to FaceBook from my web site....It then generates 2 Blocks of code....

I put the first one in my index.template.php file.

The second block of code I made a html block in SP and put it in there just as it was.....

Works great...

I'm finding out after you put that 1st block of code in your index.template.php, all the rest of the options they give you will work from it...don't add it twice!....

Because I then made a 2nd SP Block, so anyone else can post to their FB page, and it worked also, without adding the 1st block of code again.....

I hope that made sense.... 8)

The Posting block I used is kind of cool....It will only show the posts made from my website, ON my website....You still have to go to FaceBook to see your entire wall posts.

It also allows you to ADMIN those posts made from your website on your website....

I suggest having a nice Header on your website...The posts will show as a link on your FaceBook with the posts showing.......

Nice little advertisement for your site......
