Reorder and reassign of boxes for users
« on: March 17, 2010, 06:12:40 PM »
Hi there !

I am not sure if it is possible at all. But I think you all know the modern web pages and social networks, where users can build their own start page, with their own boxes and options and their own ordering. Shoutbox left or riht? How large? The User just picks it and puts on HIS place he like. Like Xing and other pages. Also some not activated boxes from standard which can the user activate or deactivate like he wants to.

This has been requested before, and would be quite useful. Its one of the things I would like to see added to SimplePortal at some stage, either within the core package or (more likely) as a mod.

Damn I have read so many requests and thought I would be first with this idea. Since this is quite such a large modification, this would need more or less a complete rewrite of the portal, I am fear of. Because then there are no longer up, left, right, middle ... boxes. There are only boxes which users reorder (only for guests there are some start order). This would break with all of the art of until now SP works. Thats why i am not sure if it can be done. Maybe a version 3.x??

Sure it can be done, I don't think that it would require a full rewrite either. Although it would require making quite a few changes.

I would still have left, right, top and bottom sides, then allow the user to move blocks around between the sides, either by actually moving them live (with javascript and ajax) or by having a section in the profile area. It could become quite complex if you wanted options for how the user could move around blocks, for example, if you wanted a certain block to stay on a certain side.

The idea as discussed before, was more about allowing users to reorder the portal blocks, rather than add new ones. So the admin defines a default setup, which the user can change/reorder if they want to. The adding of new blocks by users would indeed make it quite a bit more complicated.

Hi there !

I do not mean that the user can make new boxes at all, the admin creates boxes, but need not all to be activated. The user can see the list of boxes which exists (and are enabled for the specific group) and can decide which to show or not, and then with ajax just move and reorder that.
So I can create different calendar boxes, the user decide which one he uses. But at default one is activated. Of course the admin has to create some more different boxes so that the users can decide which he uses.
Only reorder needs ajax. Reorder in a menue within the profile would not be that intuitive and cool like actual social network sites.

Hi there!

Yeeeaaahh! Thats it! So simple! And it works PERFECT! As I havenĀ“t upgradet to SMF RC3/SP2.3.2 until now ... will it work there also? Why not implement it as feature into SP, with a point to enable it and also a point to reset of users choice (or only of one users choice is this person has done totally waste).

It had some issues with IE if I recall correctly, just so you know. I'll update it for R3 and 2.3.2 soon.

Not sure about including it by default though. I think it's better to keep it as a mod.
