Article cutoff ignoring 'Maximum Characters' setting
« on: May 20, 2010, 11:38:27 PM »
Hi, I just installed SMF and SP.
However I have run into a problem.
As you can see the articles on the portal only shows 200 chars. It does this regardless of what i put in the "Maximum Characters Before Article Cut-off".
I have no idea why it does that. Tried numerous of combinations on the Article Settings page, but all with the same result.

LINK: http://www.timh.info/portal/index.php

Hope someone can help me.

Also, and I know this has nothing to do with your site, but I am looking to make a simple admin addon which allows the admins to input simple things in a mysQl database from the admin CP. Now, I know how to script the addon itself, but since I just started using SMF I have no idea what files to mess with, so if some kind person could link me a page where this is explained I would be very grateful.

Thanks a lot.

You are saying that you set "maximum characters before cutoff" at http://www.timh.info/portal/index.php?action=admin;area=portalconfig;sa=articlesettings, but articles ignores that?

Are you using the [cutoff] tag in the articles? The cutoff tag overrides the setting.

Actually, SimplePortal offers a really simple way for you to get started with a custom feature like that -- a custom PHP page. Put your functions in new file with a unique name in sources. Load that file in the custom php page, and start executing. Make sure you set permissions on that custom page so NOBODY can see the page (that means only admins can use it).

SimplePortal also offers an easy way to create links to admin-only things -- a custom BBC or HTML block with admin-only permissions.

Nope thats not inthere. And the cut is set to 3000 at the moment, but it still only shows 200 chars.

That's very puzzling.
I cannot guess the cause. So I'm going to start asking you for all kinds of information, OK?

1) You are running SMF 1.1.11 and SimplePortal 2.3.2?
2) Please list all mods you have installed, in addition to SimplePortal
3) Please attach a screenshot of the SimplePortal "Article Settings" page, showing that you have set the cutoff for 3000 characters

Unfortunately, I won't be around for a couple of days. If nobody helps you solve this before I return, I'll be back.

I have clarified the title of your original topic post, in the hopes that someone else can help you until I return.

It seems that if I do add the [ cutoff ] tag at the end it posts the whole thing regardless of my cutoff setting.
I can set setting to 10 and the tag at the end, and it still shows the whole thing. Don't get me wrong I do want it to show the whole thing, just find it a bit weird that it totally ignores the setting.

I have resolved this.

Problem was that I was using the block called "Board News" instead of actually using the article system.
So, after removing the BN block, it all works at it is supposed to.

However I would still like a link to a thread about how to make an admin side addon.

I'm glad you have discovered the difference between boardnews and articles.

I'm going to close this support topic, since you say your problem is solved.

I hope you understand -- it is confusing to mix several topics in one thread.

I'd like you to take your custom coding needs to the custom coding board.  You can start out with a clear description of what you wish to accomplish, and any pieces of HTML and/or PHP you already have available.
Over there, you are sure to receive lots of advice on how to get the job done.

Thanks!
