Simple Portal vs Tiny Portal
« on: October 17, 2008, 06:01:22 PM »
I'm a long time Tiny Portal user but I've noticed simple portal a couple times in SMF and so decided to take a peak at your site.

If I were to uninstall TP and install SP, would there be conflicts?

How would you say SP is better than TP since the look from a user stand point seems to be identical?

I don't belive that there will be any conflicts, although it may depend on your TinyPortal version. I would suggest that you make a backup first and then give it a go. Making a database converter between TinyPortal and SimplePortal is something that has been discussed by the SimplePortal Team, but no-one has implemented anything yet.

Well, I think the main difference is that SimplePortal is easier to use, we don't have as many features as TinyPortal yet, but we are working on many new features, we also provide a solid solution for SMF 2 Beta. We do pride ourselves that almost no theme edits are required (just adding a 'forum' button) for SimplePortal to work properly, which is one of the advantages that SimplePortal has over TinyPortal.

Coming from a TinyPortal background you may miss a few of the features that TinyPortal has. We are more than happy to take in any input or feature suggestions that might help us to improve SimplePortal.

I just want to throw out there that no matter what any of our members or team members say in this topic, or similar topics, SimplePortal respects TinyPortal and other portal solutions out there. We feel that our approach is more beneficial for our users, but we do not condemn or put down any other portal solutions.

The above was an official Team position. It is, in no way, associated with my personal opinions or the personal opinions of any other SimplePortal Team member.
Ms. Eliana TamerinIt should be painfully obvious by now that I don't respond to support PMs. Don't send me PMs for support. They will be ignored and deleted, post on the Support Boards to get support.

Quite so. As Eliana Tamerin and LHVWB have outlined, we of Simple Portal encourage users to try other portal solutions if SP does not fit their preferences.

We're not in some epic death match to be better or more exuberant than the other portal solutions. We all love Simple Machines, and we love it enough to make code alterations to the extent of creating large modifications for it. We are all in the same place in regards to our hearts. We code to help people and to show our passion and help them enjoy their SMF experiance even more.

Currently Simple Portal is undergoing the final steps of releasing version 2.1. This version will contain more features and options then the previous versions, and may appear to be much different than the other portals. Likewise Simple Portal, in theory and by code, is easier to adapt, alter, and understand.

Its probably unlikely that we will make our own image gallery because there are already two Gallery mods for SMF:
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=473
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1365

The next SimplePortal version will have blocks for both of them, as one of them is fairly new.

Hi to all ;D
I am new here and I am very interested in Simple Portal.
I see that have many things that I like.
Like User Info, Who's Online and many other cool things.

Someone in the Simple Machines forum said that Tiny Portal consume many resources and he recomend install MKPortal instead. I don't know MKportal but I know that is a CMS that work with many other systems but I like more Simple Portal because is created 100% for SMF. Is more easy for me works with 100% SMF.

Can tell how many resources consume this mod in the forum compared with Tiny Portal.
I hope that use less memory ram and less resources than Tiny Portal.

Me site is down now because a spawn attack. But I'm going to reopen it again.
I want delete the Joomla and the Coppermine Gallery.

Can I ask how works Simple Portal with this other mod?
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1365
The name of the mod is SMF Media Gallery.

I hope that works fine because I want delete the coppermine gallery.

Also Simple Portal had the own download zone? because I see that is different from the other download mod.

Thanks for all.

Howdy!

I am in the rare catagory....I can honestly say that I have used ALL 3 of the portals you have mentioned.  mkPortal...I don't care for how it is set up. Having to create a folder for it...then a folder within that folder for SMF (or any other forum software)....and leaving an index file OUTSIDE of the root....that is poor design in my opinion. It limits me in a lot of ways.  One of the biggest problems is that when you have SMF housed in a folder within a folder...a great many of the mods (for example, Charles Hill's AWESOME Blog Community mod) will not function.

TinyPortal....

No disrespect to this fantastic effort....but there are many errors in the coding that I have found...it tosses back a great many errors in the browsers...it's VERY poorly laid out, hard to configure....but it IS powerful if you tinker with it long enough. But seldom do admins have lives that will afford them the time to spend 72 hours tinkering.  I have kids to care for and a job. SO there ya go.  I think it might have some amazing potential down the road...and I mean absolutely no disrespect to the author...who has done a body of work online that I deeply respect.  But those are my opinions.

Simple Portal:  I simply cannot WAIT until the next release. It's reliable and I THINK that it looks MUCH better than either of the above mentioned portal systems. I have used it on THREE live sites with much traffic on ONE in particular....and I LOVE the ease of use.  The admin area is laid out NICELY....it's easy to understand, but it's just as capable as the lofty MKPortal (more so!) and even without some of the features of TinyPortal, it is so much more worth the effort and time investment.  There are ways around what LITTLE it lacks (which isn't much! They've thought of almost everything).  I have said it before and I Wil say it again...I will not have an SMF site without Simple Portal.

I think that is a fair review.

As for SMF Media Gallery...it works GREAT with Simple Portal!!  SP even has a block created for displaying pictures from it.

Trust me...you'll love it.

David

Hello all

I came here in SP (moving from TP) after upgrading to SMF 2 beta 4. But now I feel very comfortable with this real simple mod. I have a photographic site with little traffic so I decided to use an old computer as my own web server. In this case, simplicity and lightness of SP can accomodate my needs.

My only suggestion for this time is this (very usefull) block's of recent posts characteristic, to repeat a write for every post at the same topic. The last post comes at the first place so a visitor often goes to the topic from the last post.
And if a set of 10 posts becomes quickly, all block is dominated by this repeated info.

Thanks anyway for this mod, sorry for my English I try my best.. :)

Why not just set it to display Topics instead of Posts?

That can be done by modifying the block's settings. :)
