Change block type
« on: August 10, 2009, 08:09:25 PM »
Another feature that will be really nice to have implemented in SP is the feature to change the block type, I mean if I have an html block and now I want to use BBC I have to create another block and copy/paste the info and them delete the other block (a lot of things for such a little change) so I suggest a feature in the edit block page, after "Type:" a dropdown (Just like TP) where you can change the block type to another, this is doable and easy to do, so will be nice to have it in the RC2  :D

Regards

Okay, firstly I am going to state my opinion on being able to change a blocks type in general. I have looked over TP and PortaMX which can change any block type to any other (unless I am mistaken).

Being able to change any blocks type to another type is generally a bad idea, for the reasons below:
- Each block has differently parameters, why change your Board News block to a Recent Topics block? When its just as easy to add a new block and delete the old one...
- The process for changing block types, will either leave parameters which only apply to the old block type wasting space and meaning that you could have irrelevant settings if you ever go back to the old type, or that you might accidentally change types, change back, and find that your settings are gone. Either way, its annoying...

Having said that, its would be useful to be able to swap between HTML and BBC block types, but those would be the only blocks where it wouldn't be a pain. Its would be nice, but not urgent...

i'm not too bothered about changing the type in the way mentioned, but it would be great if it can be changed - left to right, or left to top...

it may be doable already, but i can't see the option :)

Nathaniel, why not implement a method to change the type of a block... but changing the type pretty much clears the params and creates a fresh new block of what was requested.

Example, if I had a User Info block and changed the type to a Recent Posts block... no parameters will be sent or matched. It will just make the process of deleting the old one and adding a new one faster.

That's what the arrows are for on the block's list page. :P

ah ok, thanks - i thought they represented listing position within the block type... although why it would have left and right in there wouldn't make sense if that were the case...

my excuse? my baby gives me about 4 hours a sleep a night if i'm lucky...  :dead:
