Installing SP on SMF 2.0 RC3... SO confused!
« on: October 03, 2010, 06:44:37 PM »
I am confused to the max!

I successfully installed SMF 2.0 RC3 with File Zilla today no problems at all.. I installed a few themes, no problems at all...

Now I want simple portal.

I downloaded SimplePortal_2.3.2.zip today. Logged onto my forums, went to

Admin > Packages > Download Packages

I clicked "Upload Package", selected the .zip file, said "installed successfully" and then it said "[Install Mod]" I clicked it, and then it tested connections or something.

There are 27 types it looks like this:

Code: [Select]
1. Execute Modification ./index.php                                                Test successful
2. Execute Modification ./SSI.php                                                        Test successful
3. Execute Modification ./Sources/Admin.php                                Test successful
4. Execute Modification ./Sources/BoardIndex.php                        Test successful
5. Execute Modification ./Sources/Display.php                                Test successful
6. Execute Modification ./Sources/Help.php                                        Test successful
7. Execute Modification ./Sources/Load.php                                        Test successful
8. Execute Modification ./Sources/ManagePermissions.php                Test successful
9. Execute Modification ./Sources/ManageServer.php                        Test successful
10. Execute Modification ./Sources/QueryString.php                        Test successful
11. Execute Modification ./Sources/Recent.php                                Test successful
12. Execute Modification ./Sources/Subs.php                                        Test successful
13. Execute Modification ./Sources/Subs-BoardIndex.php                Test successful
14. Execute Modification ./Sources/Subs-Boards.php                        Test successful
15. Execute Modification ./Sources/Who.php                                        Test successful
16. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/Display.template.php        Test successful
17. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/scripts/script.js                Test successful
18. Extract File ./PortalStandalone.php
19. Extract Tree ./Sources
20. Extract Tree ./Themes
21. Extract Tree ./Themes/default/languages
22. Extract Tree ./Themes/default/images/sp
23. Extract Tree ./Themes/default/images/admin
24. Extract File ./Themes/default/css/portal.css
25. Extract File ./Themes/default/css/portal_rtl.css
26. Extract File ./Themes/default/scripts/portal.js
27. Adapt Database install2.php

Then under that, it says:

Code: [Select]
FTP Information Required

Some of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders. Your FTP information may be temporarily cached for proper operation of the package manager. Note you can also do this manually using an FTP client - to view a list of the affected files please click here.

So I filled out the info and clicked "Test Connection" it said
Code: [Select]
530 Login authentication failed
I used 000webhost, and i still have the:

"$mysql_host" info
"$mysql_database" info
"$mysql_user" info
"$mysql_password" info.

I entered all that into the correct spots... And i still get the
Code: [Select]
530 Login authentication failed
I am willing to use Team Viewer as well as provide more information if needed.

UPDATE:________________________

The fields that asked me to enter the information goes like this:

FTP Server:   localhost     Port: 21
Username:
Password:
Local path to SMF: /home/a*****/public_html/SMF_2-0-rc3

the a***** is my username, not giving that out to anyone

I input my forums url into the FTP Server field, the mysql username into the username field, and the password i made into the password field.

NOTHING WORKED!

http://www.nb-forum.comyr.com/ is my forums url

I did it, and it said a connection was established.

Then I clicked Proceed, and then I get this error

Code: [Select]
An Error Has Occurred!
You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!

Any suggestions?

I am NOT good with FTP at all, so if it has something to do with that, directing me towards a detailed guide, or just dumbing it down for me will be GREAT!

Thanks for helping!

Use filezilla to chmod your Packages directory and its contents to 0777 (see this SMF documentation). If that doesn't work, then try creating a 'temp' directory in your Packages directory, then chmod that to 0777 as well.

Yeah... when I said not good at FTP , I meant i need either a detailed tutorial, or a video to understand how to use it.

You should see how bad I am.

How would I create a "temp"? Not sure at all about FTP lol.

There is a link in my last post to SMF documentation for chmoding. A simple google search like "filezilla chmod" or "filezilla create directory" will give you numerous tutorials for such issues.

Ugh forget it...

This community just doesn't comprehend beyond a certain point when it concerns problems with installation.

You asked for access to tutorials/documentation, which we gave. I'm not sure what you're refering to. If you are still having problems, then try explaining your problems, otherwise its impossible for us to help.

I noticed that the topic has been sort of solved but .... I noticed that going to your home page, it goes directly to an INDEX page ... Looks like you got a problem other than Simple Portal. To go to your site, you have to click on the 2.0 rc3 highlighted tab from the INDEX page ...... Your problem is not SP, but the way that you got your site set up, respectfully.

Don't give up, it is a fun hobby ... you will learn the basics to php in no time at all. There are alot of great people here that will help you out.
No need for Trouble finding me, for I find it perfectly on my own

xibrendanx3,

You can do this -- don't give up hope! You may be unfamiliar with many things, but you can learn fast if you try.  If you break Nathaniel's suggestions down into pieces, you can figure out how to figure out each piece.
Use filezilla
Want a tutorial on a program? Try googling. There are several filezilla tutorials out there.  At least one of them ought to help you get started
Quote
to chmod your Packages directory and its contents to 0777 (see this SMF documentation).
The SMF chmod documentation ells you that chmod is about permission.  Try a quick Google search on filezilla permission to learn more.
Quote
If that doesn't work,
If you have gotten this far, you have learned a lot in a short time. If you still need help to get this far, please ask some very specific questions about the step you are having trouble getting through.

Quote
then try creating a 'temp' directory in your Packages directory, then chmod that to 0777 as well.
If you have completed the steps above,, you have found your SMF directory using Filezilla, and seen the Packages directory. Those Filezilla tutorials should have told you how to create a directory.  And your recent chmod experience should have you confident in setting the permission on the new temp directory.  But if you are stuck at any point, you can always ask for some specific help.
