Does Frontpage get cached separately than index page ??
« on: December 08, 2010, 09:24:59 AM »
Hi all
I just moved my domain from http://clinicalresearchforum.com to http://clinicalresearchsociety.org. I also changed the settings for Simple Portal to have front page but it seems that search engines may not be caching the forum page separately. Is this true? Does SimplePortal make the forum index page inaccessible to the search engines. I have pretty url installed so for my site the forum is available at http://clinicalresearchsociety.org/forum/
Thanks
Sam

SimplePortal does not give any search engine directives.
Check your directories (/ and /forum) for files that may contain search engine directives.

But, actually, it looks like you've got some combination of pretty urls and .htaccess causing
http://clinicalresearchsociety.org/some-nice-videos-links-and-articles-on-clinical-research/can-anybody-tell-me-list-of-indian-cdm-companies/ to be a link to a message in your forum. (Naively, I had expected http://clinicalresearchsociety.org/forum/some-nice-videos-links-and-articles-on-clinical-research/can-anybody-tell-me-list-of-indian-cdm-companies/, but that does not work)
But the Google preview and the Google cache of this page are empty. I don't know why that is.

Without pretty urls, what would the URLs of the portal and the forum be?

My forum is intalled inthe root and I am using front page as a setting in SimplePortal. So my assumption is that  except for the index page which will be rewritten as domain/forum, all the other links would stay the way they are. I don't have a directory with the name forum since my forum is installed  in the root only. .

But the Google preview and the Google cache of this page are empty. I don't know why that is.
I have just transferred the domain and google is in the process of moving the site over to the new domain clinicalresearchsociety.org. This I did only 5-6 days ago, so its very very recent change in domain. The older  page is still in google's cache here --> http://clinicalresearchforum.com/some-nice-videos-links-and-articles-on-clinical-research/can-anybody-tell-me-list-of-indian-cdm-companies .

Without pretty urls, what would the URLs of the portal and the forum be?

Portal - http://clinicalresearchsociety.org/index.php
Forum - http://clinicalresearchsociety.org/index.php?action=forum

I am a little confused now with the whole situation.
Regards
Sam

It seems pretty straightforward.
Presumably, Google will catch up in time.

You might check with other pretty URLs users for their experiences with Google.

I don't think SimplePortal will cause any Google issues.

I am just wondering if google will cache the /forum as well. Why I am a little concerned is that my site's SEO may be affected since the portal front page characteristics like title and description will be similar to the /forum page. I had thus asked about changing the title of the portal page in another post of mine that you responded to. Do you think my concern is genuine and I should keep the title of these pages separate. At this time, the SimplePortal front page title is just picked up from the default forum title.
Thanks

Other than trying to provide good page titles, SimplePortal was not designed with an eye toward SEO. For a good answer to your questions, you should probably find an SEO expert.

There are probably a number of other things you can do to help get your website indexed appropriately. Some of these changes may involve changes to the template (for which you may find more help at SMF).

If you need more tips on making portal-specific changes, we'll do our best to help you figure out how.

To research my question as to whether google caches the forum index page ( index.php?action=forum) when SimplePortal is installed and active, I went to the showcase section of SimplePortal and randomly picked some websites for testing. For all of the the ones I tested, google does not have a cached page for the forum page separate to the index portal page. So my question remains - Does google caches the index.php?action=forum or /forum ( Depends if one has pretty url mod installed) when SimplePortal portal front page is activated.
My apologies for behaving a little naive here though.
Thanks
Sam

Hi Sam

Google doesnt much mind what your pages are called ...GoogleBots are very hungry and obese. Whats is important are keywords you use in your content. Another importance to getting indexed high is having links back to your site or articles (popularity).

Think in terms of the person searching, what keywords would they use to find the info you offer. That is what will come up in their search.

Do a search for GoogleBot...

Here's a couple to get you started..

And this one makes me fall of my chair ..Notice the date ...lol..

Hope this helps some  8)

It looks to me like a couple of your recent posts were victims of a recent spam war.
There was an awful lot of spam all of a sudden, and I think your posts accidentally went out with the trash.

I do not have information about how Google caches URLs at a website running SimplePortal and SMF.
I do not think I will be able to help you answer this question.
I do not think other members of the SimplePortal team will be able to provide the information you are seeking about how Google handles your website.

Because I cannot help you, I am inclined to mark the answer as "This information not available from SimplePortal.net (Closed/Solved)".  "Solved" is really the only way I have to close a topic.

Do you have any objection to me marking this topic as solved?
