Topic: URL Rewriting for pages?

I've been trying to get url rewriting to work on pages with no luck.

I'm running SMF 2RC4, SP 2.3.3, and PrettyURLs (which seems to conflict with SP's built in SEF URL feature). 

Very simply... I want the following:

www.website.com/index.php?page=whatever

to show up as:

www.website.com/page/whatever

I tried the following line in my .htaccess:

RewriteRule ^page/?$ ./index.php?page=$1

and no dice...

Can anybody help?  I LOVE SP, and would love it even more if I could dynamically create pages with it that had nice urls.

There are several REGEXP testers available online, which will help you develop regular expressions more easily.

RewriteRule ^page(/) ./index.php?page=http://corz.org/serv/tricks/htaccess2.php
 
And, using SimpleSEF, you don't have to do any of this:
http://simpleportal.net/index.php/page,blocks_in_block_sample
Gets interpreted exactly the same as http://simpleportal.net/index.php?page=blocks_in_block_sample
