1 more question regarding install now
« on: March 30, 2011, 10:24:01 PM »
I've updated to SMF RC5 without issues. My hosting is through HostGator where they don't support chmod 777. I downloaded SimplePortal 2.3.3 today and uploaded it, then went into Package Manager for install and it shut me down giving me the Internal Server 500 white screen.

HostGator says since 2.3.3 chmod's itself to 777 is the reason for the white screen. Is there a different way to get around this install issue with my host?

You will run into this problem with many mods.

SMF has a preference for chmod 0777. SMF's package manager always checks the files and folders it is about to use to make sure they are writeable.  If they are not, it makes them 0777. You can see this throughout Packages.php and Subs-Packages.php.

One thing you can try is
1) CHMOD all SMF files and folders to the most permissive your host will let you get away with
2) Create the directory Packages/temp, and make sure it is writable, also.

If this does not solve the problem for you, you might wish to confer with other HostGator users at simplemachines.org.

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?

Generally, the Package manager is the best way to install SimplePortal.
