Portal in root?
« on: September 22, 2011, 03:57:11 PM »
I have been looking around the forum here, and the question has been asked in a few ways, but I am not seeing what I need to know..

I would like my portal located in the domains root www.mydomain.com
and my forum is located in www.mydomain.com/forum
just like at http://demo.simpleportal.net/

I installed simple portal (using SMF package installer)
was I not supossed to do that?
the install went smooth and I like the features so far, I think it will work for us.
can I just move some file (or files) over to the root to make it work?
or do I need to remove/re-install it another way?
I just want to use Simple portal as a front page so to speak.. like a little preview of the forum
fogive me for asking a question I know must have asked and answered many times

if I do what it says here http://simpleportal.net/index.php?action=docs;area=set_up_standalone_portal
I get line after line of errors when I load the main page unless I disable the portal, then it forwards the main page to /forum

Please tell us, very specifically
* Where exactly your standalone portal file is located, and what it is called.
* In your standalone portal file, what exactly is the whole line which starts with $forum_dir
* In index.php?action=admin;area=serversettings;sa=database, what do you have in SMF Directory
* In index.php?action=admin;area=portalconfig;sa=generalsettings , what do you have in Standalone URL

Thanks

ok.. sorry for the delay, been a busy weekend...

portal mode           "Standalone"

this is in the portalstandalone.php file (Uploaded to the websites root directory and renamed to index.php)
(it was already filled in for me)

after all those errors comes the portal... although it is a bit wrong.. I can set it up from there.. but the errors just stink

any input?

Please tell us, very specifically

Thanks
I am a bit confused on your last 2 questions..
what index.php file?
do you mean the one I just renamed to index.php?
or another one?

in the forums admin panel.. under databases and paths it says:
forum URL    http://www.michiganwhitetails.net/forum
SMF directory  /home/pczhosti/public_html/michiganwhitetails.net/forum

what else?

Unless I am mistaken, instead of standalone you wanted the Portal as your front page?  I recommended you uninstall the portal and install it as your front page.

Right now, you have redirection of /index.php to /forum/index.php?

You did this in your .htaccess file?

This is exactly what it should do. When you disable the portal, you are telling SimplePortal not to show the portal. So it shows the forum, instead.  The SimplePortal standalone portal is meant to work as part of your forum.

I understand you disabled the portal because of the errors.
The errors seem to be related to a problem setting up $context
I cannot understand how 'html_headers' would be unset after DetectBrowser had been run.

What happens if you run SimplePortal  in "Front Page" mode instead of in Standalone mode?

Something is very wrong, and I don't know that it is SimplePortal's fault.
A bunch of stuff that should be set up in $context is not set up, and I don't know why.
What other mods do you have installed?

I'm not sure about the problem myself but you even have errors on ssi_examples.php file:

http://www.michiganwhitetails.net/forum/ssi_examples.php

It's probably related, since SimplePortal relies on SSI.php. If you get that solved, you should be able to run SimplePortal just fine.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

I really don't have any mods installed

1. SimplePortal 2.3.2
2. SMF 2.0.1 Update 1.0

any clues where I would start looking to find a cure?
search terms, forums.. etc?

I am going to guess that the problem may have occured with the 2.0.1 update.
I am guessing this because of missing $context in Load.php

Another possible problem could be with the  SimplePortal install.
Did you uninstall SimplePortal before the 2.0.1 update, and then install it again afterwards?

Did the problem start before or after you installed the update?

My advice would be
1) uninstall SimplePortal (ignoring any errors, but don't delete the data)
2) test. If the problem does not go away, do a large 2.0.1 install.  At least of all the php files.
3) If that is fine, try the SimplePortal install again. test.

I see that you are not getting the big errors at the top of your forum at http://www.michiganwhitetails.net/forum/ssi_examples.php

That is good.

However, I see that you are still getting bad errors at http://www.michiganwhitetails.net/forum/ssi_examples.php

This shows that SimplePortal did not get completely uninstalled
* SSI.php is still loading Subs-Portal.php
* Subs-Portal.php still exists.

So the SimplePortal uninstall simply did not happen.
Please look at your admin center and see if the Simple Portal part of the admin center is still there.

Please look at the list of installed packages to verify whether the package manager THINKS it uninstalled Simple Portal.

I fixed the standalone issue, as well as a menu problem after SimplePortal started working fine. I was going to fix the header styling issue with custom themes as well, but then I realized that you have been running 2.3.2. I have installed the patched 2.3.3 version we have been using here and all should be fine now. Seems like I already fixed the initial problem with standalone mode in 2.3.3.

I have put the portal on maintenance mode (you can turn off the maintenance mode through Admin > SimplePortal > Information > General Settings) so that only admins can access the page for now.

Please don't forget to remove the temporary accounts you have created for me. And sorry that it took so long for me to take a look at this.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

It's people like you who make me continue working on this project one way or other despite all the difficulties of life. Your initial post (about owing me a beer or whatever I need) alone is a lot lot more than someone who couldn't even look at your problem for a whole month deserves and I can only thank for your donation. Thank you very much!

I can't add any more to what my Teammates have said besides a genuine, "Thank you!"
