How many blocks can you have?
« on: January 18, 2012, 05:03:14 AM »
Hello!
I would like to know is there a limit for number of blocks on forum?
For example, if I want to have one different top block for each topic, and have 1000 topics,
is that too much?
Can that cause problems?

Information on each block is stored as a row on the blocks table.
I think you will be OK with 1000 blocks.
But, of course, if you keep adding blocks, that table will keep growing.
For each new topic, you will also add a block.

This sounds like an awful lot of work.

Perhaps there could be an easier way to achieve your goal.  What are you up to?

Hello AngelinaBelle!
Sorry for not responding, I did not see your answer until now.

I want to create something like mini encyclopedia of plants, where I would like to put text about plant on top of topic and use topic-forum for comments.
I know that I can put that text in first post, but I don't like empty space under poster info, or how it all looks like with existing mods in SMF (which change look of poster info).
I can left only name of poster and remove empty space under it, but I would like members to have option to put avatars and other info stuff in their posts.

I know that perhaps I should try with wordpress or else, but I think that SMF+SimplePortal gives much more useful options.

So, I wanted to know if I put text about plant in top block of topic, and have for example 1000 topics is there a possibility for forum to crash or to load slowly or is there something else I should consider?

Thanks!

I understand you using a forum a little like a wiki, to put an article about a plant in a forum.
But I do not understand why you want a separate block for each article.

How will you display 1000 blocks? On 1000 pages?

I am thinking there might be a better, easier way to achieve your goal.

The answer might have to do with a very custom theme than with creating lots of blocks.

But I don't know, because I don't fully understand.

I will not use articles.
The idea was to put on top of each topic one block with text about plant, and let people comment.
So, one topic-one top block.
I know that it is complicated a bit, but I like complicated things  8).
I will try with pages instead of top blocks, and will leave link when I finish.

I think perhaps you could just use the topic itself for the content, and allow the comments to follow the topic.

Then, to make it look the way you want, you will want a custom theme.

I think this will be easier than creating a custom page for each topic.
