Enable articles without showing them in portal
« on: April 11, 2010, 05:44:13 PM »
Is there any way to do that? I cannot.
I'd prefer to use Board News block instead.

As I understand it, you would like to see one-category articles and their message bodies on a custom page, but not see any articles at all on the Portal page.

The simplest way to get what you want is to use Board News on your custom page, and forget about articles. So you can get the articles off the portal page.

Then, instead of using articles, you move all the desired content to one board , and use that one board for BoardNews.
You can see I have done this at http://rockhallsailingclub.org/smf/index.php?page=pageRacing

Anything else would require customization (in addition to the sp_articles customization you have been experimenting with).

Perhaps you wish to request a feature like "enabling articles but supressing them on the front page" for a future version of SimplePortal?

i could switch to a board news, but i've strongly customized articles block, so i need it

as you can see:

http://www.biancocelesti.org/

there's 2 articles shown in portal, and 5 in my customized articles block.

all articles are sticked and in a section called "News" under "Notizie dal mondo Lazio"

switching to simple board news block, I need to customize articles block to show all posts from that board, and i'm not able to do that

First -- please post your feature request on the feature request board, so the development team can see it there and consider it. I'll be happy to chime in.

Second -- On your portal, it looks like you are using a modified version of my sp_articles as a bottom block, with the images suppressed. If you made that a top block, PortalArticles output would appear below it. Here are some suggestions in order of how complicated they seem to me:

  •
Use the customized sp_articles on the front page as a top block, and deal with the articles appearing again below it. You can set it for 1 article per page.
  •
Switch to board news on the front page, turning off articles. You should be able to customize the board news block somewhat in CSS
  •
Switch to board news on the front page, turning off articles.  Get more customization by modifying the board news block a little bit.
  • Use the highly-customized sp_articles block on the front page, and modify SimplePortal so it doesn't do articles on the front page.
I can think off the top of my head how to do 1, 2, and 3.  It would take me a little digging to figure out 4, but it might be a one-line hard-coded fix. Of course, #4 would have to be fixed again every time there is a new SimplePortal release.

I like 1 best because it only involves modifying the CSS.
I find it a pain to keep track of my custom sp_articles block whenever some kind of upgrade comes along, so, if I had it to do over again, I might go with suggestion 1 for the site I maintain.

The answer to the question --
Quote
Is there any way to enable articles without showing them in portal?
Is no -- not in the current version of SimplePortal.

Getting your portal page the way you want it will take some customization.
I've marked this topic solved, since the question is answered, and will discuss the customization in the new topic.

If you don't agree with marking this topic as solved, you are welcome to mark it as unsolved again.
