Issue with shoutbox
« on: June 07, 2011, 06:01:16 PM »
I try adding a shoutbox and I seem to be getting this error
Code: [Select]
Database Error
Illegal mix of collations (utf8_unicode_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,IMPLICIT) for operation 'ifnull'
File: /home/superher/public_html/Sources/Subs-Portal.php
Line: 1266

I'm using SMF RC5 | Simple Portal 2.3.3
Any help will be more than appreciate.

Thank you.

It seems to be an issue with your database. Maybe you can try to modify your collation in the tables just to experiment.

This collation problem may or not be related to the SimplePortal installation, if you were using an unexpected collation to begin with.  There are a couple of ways it can come about.
This is something you can fix using phpmyadmin, or whichever database administration tool you use to make sure all the tables and their columns used in the queiry on Subs-Portal.php line 1266 are collated the same way (collation has to do with what "alphabetical order" means, and is important when you do SQL queries that involve ordering by the value in a column).

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?

If you don't mind me asking, basically what exactly needs to be done. Because words like collation make no sense to me as I'm a rookie at all of this. I know how phymyAdmin works so if you could kindly tell me what needs to be done, I should be able to solve this.

Now you've gone beyond my experience. I know there is a simple SQL command to fix collations on tables, but I've never done it myself.  This kind of question comes up all the time at simplemachines.org.
My best advice would be to ask in one of the support boards there.
I'm sorry I can't offer you better help than that, but I don't think you want me trying to lead you through a command I have never used myself.

It was a pretty easy fix. Thanks so much Angie!
It's amazing how you guys offer your support as quickly despite the fact that you'll are low staffed.
SP has so much more potential. I hope someone sees that someday and come help you guys here.

I'm so glad you got the help you needed with your collation problem. If you could provide a link to the topic where you got help at simplemachines.org, it might help the next person here who runs into the same problem.
Well, you know, I've been here because I was just one of those users who wanted to lend these guys a hand. I'm hoping someone else will come along and do the same, to keep the support levels up.
Our founder is an amazing coder (he said so himself!), but there is only one of him! And he's a student. And he's on the SMF development team. He's pretty busy.

Once I got my forum smoothly running I'm gonna hop by and lend a hand. I know I'm a really bad coder but I can help out with minor issues, hopefully.

BTW here's the fix to the issue | http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=335816.msg2263636#msg2263636
