ShoutBoxe not refreshing
« on: February 11, 2014, 03:18:59 AM »
Hello SimplePortal comunity!

Im having some issues with the SP shoutbox. When i enable a shoutbox on any of the pages from forum, the writing doesnt show when i write it ,i have the refresh the page for the writing to show. The refreshing icon works constantly at the default refresh time (0) and when i change the refresh time to lets say 5 seconds its the same issue, just the refresh icon starts when i type a word in and doesnt stop until i refresh page.
I asked on forums comunity too ,but someone sayd i may have more luck here .
Saw here a post where the replacing of Themes/default/PortalShoutbox.template.php would do the trick but when i do it ,it gives and error on simpleportal page and i cant acces it.I deleted the block and it stoped.

The forum version is : 2.0.7
Its newly installed,on this version i only installed mods with no error on instalation.

Thank you in advance.

Whenever shoutbox refresh fails, there is a problem with what is called AJAX.  Basically, there is some javascript code using a URL to get an XML document from your SMF forum, which the javascript code then pops into the part of the shoutbox where the shouts go.

When this fails, the most common error is that the XML document is empty, or else does not contain the content the javascript code was expecting to find.  Then, rather than blank out the current contents, it just quietly fails .... and tries again in a few seconds.

There can be several reasons for AJAX failure.  The forum might not respond quickly enough.  It might encounter an error that causes it to send something different from what the code expected (including not sending XML at all).  The javascript might have a "collision" with other javascript running on the same page.

So debugging a javascript problem can be subtle and time-consuming.

On some hosts, having a bunch of users all with shoutbox pages open, all asking for a response from your SMF forum at the same time, causes more open connections per some period-of-time than you host wants to allow, and this causes the error.

So the easiest things to try are:
1) uninstall every other mod besides SMF.  See if you still have the problem.  If the problem goes away, you can suspect that one of the other mods is not compatible with the shoutbox, and you can then narrow it down to that one mod.  Or else, the total sum of stuff going on at your forum is more than your hosting plan can handle.
2) If you don't have any luck from turning off mods, limit the shoutbox.  Make it so only admin can see the shoutbox.  Open up only one tab in the whole wide world to that shoutbox.  See if you still have the problem.  if so, the problem MIGHT BE CAUSED by too many shoutboxes open on too many browser tabs around the world at one time.

If neither 1) nor 2) gives you the answer to your problem, then you might want to consider working through, step by step, to see where you encounter the problem.  This will involve adding "debug print" type statements to your forum, to capture what is going on each step of the way.  This kind of work is tedious, which is why I suggested eliminating the easiest possible things I could think of (without regard to whether they are more likely) first.

Please let us know how this works out.  It can be very tedious to debug AJAX problems.
