Removing Top Menu from Fornt Page and SimplePortal Pages
« on: December 10, 2010, 12:08:52 AM »
Hello all
I am in the process of designing a front page for my forum at http://www.clinicalresearchsociety.org. The way I am designing it is that I am creating a vertical menu in a left block that will navigate the visitor through many SimplePortal pages. This will allow me to have a website with a few pages along with the forum. Now that I have a left Menu, I would like to get rid of the top menu only from the front page and any other SimplePortal pages that  I create and link to the front page through the left menu. I plan to incorporate a "Forum" tab in the left menu so that visitors can visit the forum at any time. I will need the top menu in the forum though as usual. I am sure this can be achieved but not sure how to do it. Some expert help is needed.
Thanks and have a god day!
Sam

You would do this by modifying your index.template.php.
This has come up before (for example: http://simpleportal.net/index.php?topic=5096.msg30848#msg30848 )

According to this user:
Code: (find) [Select]
  // Show the menu here, according to the menu sub template.
  template_menu();

Code: (replace) [Select]
  // Show the menu here, according to the menu sub template.
$hidemenu = "http://".$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'].$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'];
if (!( ($hidemenu==$scripturl) or (!empty($_GET['page'])) ))
      template_menu();

Warning:  I have not tested this.

This seems likely to work as long as the values for
$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] and $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] are correct.

You could try printing out these values to see what they are.

Hi Angelina

From the post that you referred, he writes the follwoing

echo "my new menu";
else
  template_menu();

What I would like to achieve is that the top horizontal menu on all simple portal pages be replaced by an exactly looking menu populated with tabs that I customize and with drop downs. Please have a look at the css menu I created in css.  http://www.clinicalresearchsociety.org/index.php?page=page2234 I would like this to happen in the native menu of the theme instead of a css menu that looks really odd and doesn't go with the theme. I am not sure how to create a new menu that we will echo. I don't know much of php. Do I have to create a new php file for this menu. Please help.

PS: I was able to hide the native menu by the above method.

Thanks
Sam

Please disregard this post since I have found a workaround using a different theme but now I am stuck with a new design issue that I posted for assistance in another post.
Thank you
