Language Based Welcome HTML / PHP Block
« on: September 15, 2010, 12:09:58 PM »
I want to create a simple language based welcome. How do I create a block and where to put the welcome text and in which language file should I put it? Let say the text is "Welcome to MCS School!".

I hope you won't mind me moving this to customization.
It isn't something that simplePortal, out of the box, does.

One easy thing to do is to put the language strings into a file that's already loaded.  Like Sportal.*.php   The downside to this is that you have to keep track of them whenever you install a new version of SimplePortal.

Now comes the easy part -- using the language strings.
So you create a string
Code: [Select]
$txt['Welcome_MCS'] = 'Welcome to MCS School'; in Sportal.english.php. You know what to do in the other language files you are using.

Now, in a php block, all you have to do is
Code: [Select]
echo $txt['Welcome_MCS']
Once you have that all figured out, you can look into how to load a custom language file.  I've never looked into that myself, so I'd have to poke around the Source files to see how this is done.

Can I create that in SMF language file instead and call it in the php block. Let's say in index.english.php file. How do we call them into SP block then? Similar as above? Thanks for moving it to the right board.

Yes, you can create a new language file.
You would put them in with the rest of the language files (in Themes/default/languages).

You could create them as MCS.*.php (where * has to be english and any other languages your forum supports).

Then, to use them in a php block or page, you can simply
Code: [Select]
loadLanguage('MCS', '', false);See Sources/Load.php for the function loadLanguages

Ooh. It is that easy. I think I will create them. I was thinking to have a multiple language (at least two) Malay and English.

And how do I make the block title to use words from the language file instead? I mean, can I use like what your sample?:

Code: [Select]
echo $txt['Advertisement']

You cannot use php in a block's title, unfortunately.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to use No Title for the block, and put your entire message inside the block body.

Ok. I get it. I can also create something like block title inside a php block and call the text from there. Thanks again for your help.
