How can I make Articles from Posts instead of Topics?
« on: June 18, 2010, 06:44:16 PM »

Is there a way so as to "add as article" a specific post of a topic, instead of the first post of a topic?
In other words, how can I use a specific post of a topic, to show it as an intro of a topic marked as article?

For example, there was a topic announcing a car race. The topic had 23 pages. Then the day of the race was passed, the race was over and the members continued replying to the topic, by posting pictures from that race.
How can I show the member's post with the picture in the frontpage?

As far as I figured out how SP works with articles, I should make a new topic including the pictures on the first post of the topic so as  to be able to add in the frontpage as article.
Right?

Thank you for reading.

You are correct -- SimplePortal has a way to add topics as articles, but no way to add replies as articles. This creates an article with replies, or something like a blog posting with replies.

What you want sounds much more like how facebook handles replies to a wall post. SimplePortal has not been designed to do this.

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?

Should I recommend it for future SP version or is it completely out of project lines?

Go ahead and suggest a feature.
Even if the developers decide not to implement your suggestion, they will not be upset with you, as long as you are polite and considerate.

When you do, please be clear about the functionality you would like to see.
If you can compare it to something else "everyone" is familiar with, especially if everyone can go and see what it looks like, that will be a help.

Although you were hoping to achieve this by making replies into articles, there may be some even better or easier way to achieve what you want, so don't worry about how the developers can make the new feature.

It sounds to me like you would like full or truncated text, with pictures from a topic and its replies to appear on the portal page, so everyone who comes to the website immediately sees the exciting discussion.  Something like a facebook wall.

This would be something new for SMF portals. Something more of-the-moment than articles, and more permanent than the shoutbox.  So it might have a chance of being added to a future version.  The big issue, I think, could be simplicity.

Good luck with your suggestion.

Would you like me to move this topic to the 'Custom Coding' board (if you want help editing your files to add this feature) or the 'Feature Requests' board (if you want to put this as a feature request)?

Yes I would really like your help on this. Please move it where ever you think is more likely to receive response. I leave this up to you.

Of course, I would prefer to have this feature right now (by helping me editing my files to enable the feature I asked) but I really leave it up to you since you know better than me it's survival chances  :radioactive:  :nervous-happy:

Thank you very much for offering help!
