Simple Portal SideBar Help
« on: May 14, 2010, 11:59:01 PM »
Anyone know php really good that can help me on my postal, The thing I need is a Side Bar made into php, my friend said that having a php sidebar is much easier then inserting the code into each and every web page and i am running an avp forum which contains  a lot of webpages and I need a sidebar that contains the movie, games, and etc. So if anyone know php really well respond below and tell me what you can do to help me out with my homepage/portal!

Well, this should be easy to do with SimplePortal.

After you have installed SimplePortal, you can configure blocks (ie. a php sidebar) to show where you want within the forum. You could then use the SimplePortal pages feature to display any custom pages that you have.

I am happy to explain how you can do that.

You can create blocks in the SimplePortal admin area under Admin -> SimplePortal -> Blocks. Each block has a side, you can use the arrows on the block list page to move a block to the correct side (the left/right side for you).

Then you will need to create some pages using the Admin -> SimplePortal -> Pages area. Each page will be shown at the url 'index.php?page=page_id' (there is a link for each page on the pages list).

I actually have a Sidebar.php file made already but it gets messed up, its justs lists all the blocks which is really annoying and its not popping it out to the left. I have the files right here, take a look at it.

The good news is that the file you attached only contains HTML.  That means you don't need to bother with php at all.  And you can solve some of your hassles (caused by unclosed <div>) using SimplePortal.

What you supplied is some HTML -- no php code at all.

Here is a suggestion.  It might work pretty well for you -- why not give it a try and make any adjustments from there.

* Instead of a custom php block, use a custom HTML block.
* Get rid of all the <div> and </div> tags -- you don't need them.
* Get rid of the <style> tag. It's only legal in the <head> section anyway
* Lists ought to work just as well as tables, and will probably format more nicely.

If you want to put it all in one block, you could start with something like this, and fiddle with it until you get it just how you want it.
Code: [Select]

Alright I know you must add some code in to each webpage you want the sidebar, is this it?

<?php include "sidebar.php";?>

I think I have it wrong though?

Now, you are ready to create a custom HTML block.
Go to Admin>SimplePortal>Blocks.  On the list of Left Blocks, choose the little green circle with the white plus sign in it to add a left block. Choose "Custom HTML"

Put your HTML code in that custom HTML block.
