What mod or coding are you using on your forum to make those images show up next to usernames?

Actually, the mod you're using isn't (as far as I can tell) an authorized version of the Crowns mod. The original mod can be found here. I apologize, but since the mod you're using isn't supposed to exist, I'm not able to assist you.

You should try contacting the mod author and encouraging him to seek the proper permission or get assistance from him.

It is unfortunate that the mod's author did not provide any permission to modify his code.
He could do this by adding some kind of license statement, if he wished to do so, which would give permission to modify and redistribute his code in some way.

It seems that Anthony is not following the copyright laws.
If, instead, Anthony provided a set of instructions (an install package) that could be run AFTER bolukobol's code package was installed, instead of one that contains the original author's code, this would be OK.

Nobody here would object to you discussing how the original mod does what it does, and what would need to be added to Simple Portal code in order to get the crowns to work in the shoutbox -- with the original mod.
This would definitely be a customization project.

Angelina, note that the original mod is not compatible with any current version of SMF, and will only function properly on SMF 1.x (as the 2.x version is horribly outdated).

I agree that Bukabol might have left a bit of leeway for someone to take over his mods. Not much we can do about it here, though.

It's not about giving credit. If that were the case, someone could write their own version of SimplePortal, merely give us credit, and everything would be fine and dandy. That's not the way copyright works, and since Bukabol's work is not under a permissive license it is his and his alone to determine who can use and modify it. Since there's no statement from Bukabol authorizing the continuation of this mod, it is not an authorized version. The only way for this to be resolved is for the mod author to obtain Bukabol's permission or to rewrite the mod so that none of the original code or coding patterns remain.

I agree with Eliana. You need to talk to Anthony, and perhaps to Bukabol.
Simple Portal does not want permission to work with Bukabol's code.
You want Anthony to get this permission to work with Bukabol's code, because Anthony is breaking the copyright law right now.

Or else, you want Anthony to produce a package for SMF that can be applied AFTER Bukabol's mod is installed, to create additional changes to make things work for the current version of SMF. This should be relatively easy for him to do.
