Colorize text, per user, in shoutbox?
« on: September 26, 2011, 08:36:29 PM »
I'm sure this has been asked a dozen times before, but I did try to search the topic and came up empty handed. I would like to for my users to be able to select the color of their text in the sb. The main reason is to make it more distinguishable from one person to the next. That and the users kinda dig the customization. Any ideas?

You can use color tags. Such as:

This is my text!

Thanks but I am looking for a way to make it permanent. Know what I mean?

It's "possible", but requires a few core edits to the shoutbox.

I am not able to make those edits right now, but if you're familiar enough I can point you in the right direction: ./Sources/PortalShoutbox contains the scripting for the shoutbox, you can add a new preparser to it that will hold your color preference (selected from a color droplet on the template) and then it can automatically prepend the messages with the tags (that way it retains the color).

It can be further stored into the database so you never have to reselect it too.

Thanks. That's prolly going to be a little over my head since this is all pretty new to me. I just set it up for the first time today. But, I have a buddy who was been using this software for years and I bet he could handle it better than myself. I appreciate the advice.

This does sound complicated.  The short answer, of course, is that SimplePortal 2.3.3 does not do that.

Making this happen is possible, but would not be a general support. It would definitely be about customization. There would have to be some settings added to every user's profile so the database can remember what color each person liked.

In the short term, the easiest way is to use the BBC tags.

You are certainly welcome to ask this question on the customization boards here, and also to suggest it as a feature request for a future version of SimplePortal.

OK.  Should I close this topic, or move it to a custom coding board?

Move it to custom coding board if you don't mind. That way I can be lazy and no retype everything. >:-D
