HTML block changing the portal style
« on: January 23, 2011, 06:46:16 PM »
Hello, I have a question that I searched the forum for but couldn't find.  I have created a custom HTML block, when previewed and in use it, also changes the font style in the portal (all text in menu bar, shoutbox, rss, etc...)  Is it a problem with the newly created block with this?  The style tag perhaps?

Quote
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>mainpage</title>
<style type="text/css">
body,td,th {
   font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
   font-size: 14px;
   font-style: italic;
   color: #000;
}
</style>
</head>

My other HTML blocks just use iFrames, so this is the first I have seen this.  Thank for any help, and I think this portal system is simply the best around.

Installed:
SMF 2 RC4
Simple Portal 2.3.3
AEVA Media 1.4c
Page Management 1.4

Thank you.

It is strange for a block which comes AFTER the nav bar to affect the style of the nav bar. Do you have any HTML errors on the page?

Please provide a link.
Maybe you can create
1) a simpleportal page that displays the block.
2) a simpleportal page that does not display the block

For comparison.

Thank you for replying.  This portal system is absolutely the best I have ever used!

Okay, the link is http://godschatroom.com  However, not all options are shown to guests.  I can set up a 'user' or 'admin' account to help with this.

I did create a SP page and it does do the same thing as the custom HTML block in question.  I used 'firebug' to see any errors, I do get one called - "NetworkError: 404 Not Found - .../Themes/default/css/firefox.css"  But no HTML errors and it is the same display results in 'Chrome' and 'IE' browers.

The custom HTML block in question only displays in the portal front page, it doesn't display anywhere else.  So, when the custom HTML block is displayed the text style in ALL text (not just the menu bar) is affected.  I am thinking that the <style> tag should be used in the block setup (below the display advanced options) rather than in the HTML code within the block, however I am not sure what values and syntax to enter.

Thank you for any help.

- Oh, the theme I am using is 'Transmigration 2010'

Okay, I am sorry for wasting anyone's time.  What I did is cut the '<style>' tags out of the HTML block and inserted
Quote
font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: italic;
into the 'Style Options - Custom Body Style' section of the block editor.  That seems to have fixed it.  However if I add
Quote
color: #000000;
or
Quote
color: #000;
it doesn't change the color of the text.

Thank you for your time.  :)

Added note: the 'No Title' and 'No Body" boxes are checked.

That is correct -- no style tags anywhere but in the <head> section of your document.
A strict browser would have complained about that.

If you provide a link, I can help you look through the generated HTML to understand the best way to approach this.

I had to put the hyphens before the links, otherwise the post will not show.

I understand about the spamming and the measures taken.  :)

The HTML block should not contain any of the stuff before the <body> tag.
It should not contain the <body> tag.
It should not contain the </body> tag.
It should not contain anything after the </body> tag.

Please try it that way.

Thank you for your time.  I understand, no <body> tags or anything outside of the <body> tag should not be in the block.  I didn't realize it was limited HTML for use in the blocks, thank you for the information.

I was wondering what syntax to enter in the "Custom Body Class" section and the "Custom Body Style" section of a Custom HTML Block.  In the "Custom Body Style" section   I have entered font-size: 14px; font-style: italic; color: #000000;  However, the text color is not changed to black.

Thank you.

Re: HTML block changing the portal style
« Reply #14 on: February 08, 2011, 01:37:54 PM »
correct -- when you add some HTML to the block, it is already in the middle of a page, already inside a <body> tag. So only stuff that is allowed inside a <body> tag is allowed in the HTML block.

You can look at the page HTML to see what it looks like.

Here's how you can track down little style issues:
* If you have firefox, get firebug
* If you have IE7 or IE8, use IE's developers tools -- hit the F12 button to start it.

Select the part of the HTML you want to explore. Look at the styles that are applied to it. Usually, there are several.  The "latest" cancels the earliest out. You can see this is the case with your theme.

The color for TD is defined in index.css as #444. Your inline style was overriden by the TD style, since the TD is inside the div to which you applied the style.  Have a look at the HTML to see this.

You might consider removing color from the TD in index.css, and see if that works for your site.
