It's OK to be new.
My first advice to you is to do some reading.

The first place to read is about SMF -- how to install it.
The second place to read is about SMF -- how to install a package.
You can find some helpful links at the SimplePortal documentation page: http://simpleportal.net/index.php?action=docs

Try out installing SMF -- if you need help, try the community at simplemachines.org. They have thousands of users, so you are likely to get a quick and helpful response.
Try installing a package -- like SimplePortal or maybe a smaller, less complicated package.
Again -- you will find quick help at simplemachines.org

When you understand what SMF is and how to download and install a package, you will be ready to install the SimplePortal package. You can read more here: http://simpleportal.net/index.php?action=docs;area=installing_simple_portal

Go have fun.  You won't break the computer by trying, and you will learn a lot quickly.

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?

AngelinaBelle,

I have to say thanks for the quick advice. It boosted my confidence - I started off with the install bit and now work forward... I'm in the same boat as chaotic (except I inherited a site and have limited right and try to work out how to do things by building a new site. So again thanks for the thumb up.
