Uninstalling older version for upgrade
« on: October 16, 2009, 10:46:35 AM »
First of all let me apologize for opening a new topic. I've searched and found other topics started with this problem as well but I guess I'm just too dumb to figure out how to use the info that was presented to others to help me.

So...

I want to upgrade my SP from 2.2.1 to 2.3. When I try to uninstall, I get these usual errors that others are getting...

It definitely looks like some mods installed after SimplePortal modified the code the SimplePortal uninstaller was looking for. That's why the test failed for those files. This is not surprising -- a lot of mods need to check and do stuff in the same parts of the same files.

But it's OK.  You are smarter than the uninstaller, so you can fix this by following the manual install instructions backwards.  For SimplePortal 2.3.1 installed on SMF 2.0 RC2, you would find these instructions at:
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=parse;mod=1104;attach=120231;smf_version=2.0_RC2

When you search in index.php for
Code: [Select]
sportal_init();, you can see that other mods got between it and
Code: [Select]
// Is the forum in maintenance mode? . Easy for you to fix.  Just take out everything that was not in the "Find" part of that step.

Another thing you might like to do is remove other "leftovers" like
Code: (index.php) [Select]
require_once($sourcedir . '/SPortal1-1.php');, which was not part of the 2.3.1 install.  You can search for "sp_" and "portal" to find more.

Repeat the manual uninstall process for all 3 of the files that gave you trouble.

I often find it easier to uninstall everything in the opposite order I installed it, until I get back down to the package I actually want to uninstall, then reinstall later. Saves me a lot of thinking, worrying, mistyping, and ftp'ing files to the wrong directory...

If you think you have other uninstall problems lurking in your php files, you could consider, on your next SMF upgrade, uninstalling all mods and doing the large upgrade, just to give you a fresh, clean start. Then install the mods you want, starting with the ones LEAST likely to be updated.

I think you can handle this.  If you have any questions, just post back here. Please let us know when you've got it all working again.

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?

Thanks for the reply. I will have to mull this over and decide if the reward is worth the risk here.

I trashed my forum a few months back trying to fiddle around with a few files and had to pay someone $200 to get it back online. Since I don't really have any issues with the current version of SP, I just may stick with it to avoid any potential problems.

Thanks again!

You can try uninstalling backwards in the order you installed, and see if that works easier.

If you cannot resolve the mod conflicts this way (because you or someone else has already made other changes to the files), you can do the uninstall, and follow that with the manual uninstall for the files that fail the uninstall.

Be sure to use the install/uninstall instructions for the version of SimplePortal you currently have running.
