You can do this with just a little customization of that block.
You can find some helpful examples.
For example: http://simpleportal.net/index.php?topic=6122.msg35913#msg35913

you can see where num_guests and num_users_online are displayed in that example.

I'm moving this to custom coding

I regret that I do not have the time right now to do this custom coding for you.

If you are unfamiliar with php, I think you will really benefit from a tutorial such as the one at w3schools.com.  The php manual at php.net is a big help, also.  Many of the examples on this board are very useful, as well.

In the example I gave above, once you find "online users", the number of guests, and the number of users, you can see how to add this to the Who's Online block.  You may have to work back to see how they get populated.

If you get started on your own, I'm sure someone will pop in to offer advice.
Best of luck!
