How to install Simple Portal on newest SMF? RC4?

The instructions for standalone install seems to be out of date? I installed SMF, installed the portal, verified everything works. Then I followed the instructions @ http://simpleportal.net/index.php?action=docs;area=set_up_standalone_portal .. But it seems to be incomplete. Paths are all verified. There is an additional step needed (it seems) that you need to supply the full url to stand-alone file ... from help:

----

Full URL to the standalone file.

Example: http://myforum.com/portal.php

----

It doesn't seem to make a difference, nothing but 500 errors. Are there any other steps missing from the instructions in order to install the portal as stand-alone?

(posting error #1) I get a warning when posting this post that I am running RC2 which is incorrect as I chose RC4 when registering my account.

(posting error #2) now i have to read a url (twice nice) in order to post.

(posting error #3) captcha seems to be broken .. trying again ....
(posting error #4) captcha still not accepting the letters it shows ...
(posting error #5) same bug in captcha ... again ...
(posting error #6) same bug in captcha ... again ...
(posting error #7) same bug in captcha ... again ...

Holy cow! It took 7 tries to post before captcha actually worked .... might wanna look into that product some more, it is extremely buggy.

----------------------

(note) I would of just replied to this thread with an update, but captcha is still broken and needs to be fixed (not worth trying to post tons of times)

(update)

The instructions are definatly not accurate (missing a bit of information). I went through the error logs and the script errors out because it is "writable by group". I never set it this way, so it must of been installed by the installation script that way. After fixing that security bug by changing the permissions to 444, everything is working as it should now.

please note, that is a huge security issue having permissions set to write.

It sounds like you solved the problem.

Can you be more specific about the information you feel is missing from the Standalone Portal instructions?
I'm asking because it seems complete to me, and even clear and straightforward.
But that could just be because I know how to do it already.

If you could point out the first step that tripped you up, I could start with a little rewrite there.

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?
