I cannot find a way to add the new a page link to the SP menu block. I have checked "Advanced Settings, and then "Select Pages" to add my page to the menu.  It does not add it to this in preview mode, let alone when viewing the portal.

I am trying to use the standard Forum Menu Block in SimplePortal.  I have created a new Simple Portal Page.  I am using Simple Portal in Standalone Portal mode.  The menu block is to display on the left hand side of the page.

With Advanced Settings checked, the Menu Block does not want to display unless I edit the Custom Display Options to include "portal".  That might be expected behaviour?

SMF 2 RC5 (not listable in the profile pull down) with Simple Portal 2.3.3.  My site is at www.nthwgaming.co.uk

Thanks in advance.

SimplePortal does not offer a way to show links to your pages.

The Display Options part of every block controls where the block will show up.

So, with "Advanced Options" unchecked, you may choose "Show Block On" from the drop-down list.
When you check "Advanced Options", you can then choose exactly which places to show your block.

The easiest way to show links to your SimplePortal pages is to create a BBC or HTML block and manually put your links in there.

Another alternative is to use one of the Navigation Button mods available at SimpleMachines.org for adding links to your buttons menu.

Ah, So I misunderstood the purpose of the advanced display options function thinking I was adding stuff to a menu when I was in fact choosing where the menu would be displayed.

Looks like I'm going to have to learn some proper hacking and coding skills as I had been wanting a menu that would display links that would change based on the user permissions to view them.

I hope you won't mind that I marked this topic solved.
I did solve your support question about how SimplePortal actually works.

As for the rest -- you are correct.  It is custom coding.
The good news is that there is an active community at SimpleMachines.org which knows all about all the is_ and allowed stuff you will want to use to control whether or not links show up.

Remember to set up a test forum to test this stuff on. Because you are certain to break an entire page with it at some point. I always do. Break a page, that is. And use a test forum.

It will be a good day if I only break a page.  I usually break servers!

Thanks for your guidance.
